(95,307 posts)For the past 22 years Ive figured that Agent Mike or any other interested party with the right computer equipment could draw a pretty accurate set of graphs on us, including a sociogram of who interacts with who.
But am I volunteering my DOB, SSN, home address, and mothers maiden name, all in the same post? No.
I'm just curious if the poor and near poor are as poorly represented here as elsewhere.
Please know, I'm not asking to start an argument, as much as wondering how we can become more conscious of our true dilemma including how to shine a brighter light on the issues facing us.
Please be patient with me, as I'm not a tech geek so if there's a place in DU dedicated to this, please just show me where to find it.
Thanks.

(106,808 posts)participant statements and indirectly the participation of some of the subgroups that have had that as a focus. Age breakdowns as well, although I think we can deduce that DU skews older because it is an internet forum--not a social media platform, and the former was a popular feature of the internet when DU originated but less so now. Still, we have younger (new) members who do manage to find the site, but it would be hard to know what proportion of posters fall in those age categories.
I note that fewer and fewer posters fill out their profile fully so that gender/identity and even state of residence are not knowable except when revealed in individual posts.
The only ones who know what info is available would be the admins, EarlG, and Elad. You might reach out to them.

(614 posts)I believe the Democratic party has developed huge blind spots in their messaging due to Base focused communication.
I think it's healthy to ask ourselves if we have them too.

(284 posts)And as someone who's read DU for much of my news for YEARS, I dont see it changing. My wife has long been a member & thats how I started reading. Decided to start posting after this election was over & we ended up stuck with dipshit again.
Th3 "blind spot" you speak of is real & it wont be addressed here.

(1,141 posts)seem to trend a bit older and there could be lots of reasons for that. It says little about who is reading. Thankfully, DU doesn't seem interested in collecting demographic data about members.
Sympthsical
(10,404 posts)Overwhelmingly so.
There are polls now and then, and they're fairly consistent. Less than 10% are Millennial or younger.
A HERETIC I AM
(24,632 posts)that I was a completely different physical specimen when I first joined! 2 decades will do that to ya.
But yes, the demographic for this message board has always skewed older, mostly white and middle class, with all the other groups sprinkled around the edges.

(1,208 posts)I think many of us are not what you'd call rich, or maybe not even upper middle class.
I'm poor, been that way most of my life (a couple of brief periods where I might have been able to move up). I'm old, more liberal than most, Southern and though registered Independent, vote Dem. Also not a racist, homophobic or anything else that speaks to MAGA. An atheist, too. Man, I got the whole ticket! LOL
At any rate, I doubt DU has any interest in making a list like that about any of us, and I like that. Why make it easier for the government to round us up? Oops. I've said too much about myself, probably get that midnight visit from the thugs. Oh well. Such is life.

We need to have a grand octogenarian birthday party in four years,
Hopefully we'll have a Democratic administration by then.
Think. Again.
(19,131 posts)Check out the "info" button sometime on any popular OP and you might be surprisd at the amount of "views" our posts get compared to the amount of 'member-only' "recs" or replies.
We affect a much larger audience than is obvious.
Edit to add:
And I believe that explains the existence of our long-term trolls, they're not interested in changing the minds of the handful of us that engage in discussions, they are interested in creating a false impression to the public of what a "Democrat" thinks and says.

(148,008 posts)ask about age, education, and other details. DUers have been pretty good about responding to those. But, like all DU posts, they scroll off the screen after a short time and can be difficult to find later.
So, the answer to your question is "probably not." I've seen a lot of those, and have participated, but I don't save them, so I'm not sure what they have indicated. In general, though, DUers are older than the average American, are somewhat more educated, and are far more interested in politics than the typical person.
I date back to 1945, so I'm older than most. I see a lot of peers around DU, though.
