Mass Deportation Would Be 'Catastrophic' to U.S. Economy: Report
The Congressional Joint Economic Committee has published a report showing that Donald Trump's plan for mass deportations in the United States would deliver a "catastrophic blow" to the economy. Trump's mass deportation policy would eliminate entire sectors of the American workforce at a time when the nation is already seeing critical labor shortages. Migrants fill key jobs in food production, manufacturing, and construction, and spur economic growth.
The loss of migrant workers with no American citizen to fill those jobs will result in a shortage of goods and services, causing massive price hikes, and lead to a recession. By some estimates, the resulting recession would last Trump's entire four year term.
Trump's deportation of migrant workers would:
Reduce real gross domestic product (GDP) by as much as 7.4% by 2028.
Reduce the supply of workers for key industries, including by up to 225,000 workers in agriculture and 1.5 million workers in construction.
