two wealthy California women, former dentists, arrested for serial shoplifting

Wealthy Bay Area women arrested on shoplifting charges at Tahoe ski resort
They had Louis Vuitton totes and drove a Lexus

One day in August, an employee at Parallel Mountain Sports, a retail store at Palisades Tahoe, was folding a stack of Vuori shirts when two older women walked into the store, each holding a Louis Vuitton tote.

It was a slow day in the store, and the pair were the only customers, said Paul Gwin, retail manager of Parallel Mountain Sports.

The employee left her stack of shirts to help one of the women. But when the employee returned to the stack of shirts, she noticed that half of them were missing.

Neither of the women had purchased anything.

“That put us on alert,” Gwin said.

Employees spotted the two women in the store multiple times after their August visit. They’d usually come in on Mondays, Gwin said, and employees would watch the women closely until they left the store, driving away in a Tesla or a Lexus.

“One time, I recognized them immediately and asked if they would leave their bags at the counter, and they just left,” Gwin said.

But store items continued to go missing. At one point, an employee discovered that stolen items from the store were listed on Poshmark, an online thrift store. Without concrete evidence of the thefts, however, there wasn’t much Gwin or his employees could do.

“This had been an ongoing thing for months,” Gwin said.

Placer County Sheriff's Deputy Christian Jabri recognized the silver SUV Lexus he pulled over earlier this month outside Tahoe City, California. It matched the description of a car driven by two suspected serial shoplifters.

Surveillance video linked the Lexus and the two women inside to a string of high-priced thefts from a ski shop near Palisades Tahoe, a Lake Tahoe ski resort.

Jabri arrested Tatyana Zhukovsky and Clara Michelson, both 68 and from the San Francisco Bay area, on suspicion of shoplifting from Parallel Mountain Sports in Olympic Valley.

According to the Placer County Sheriff’s Office, the women are from San Francisco and Hillsborough, a Bay Area community that is one of the wealthiest in the U.S. with a median home price over $7 million.

Online records also show Michelson bought a house in Incline Village, Nevada, in 2021 for $1.65 million.

Both were at one time licensed dentists in California.

What's a couple shirts compared to a $3000 tooth implant that actually cost about 50 bucks.

I’m a dentist and you are way off base - I’m not gonna begin to explain why.

I will say that most owners of successful businesses or professionals live rather well. This is capitalism.

It is not uncommon for individuals no matter what the income bracket is, to shoplifting I have a whole host of stories from many years of treating rich folk and the family members who were arrested. For many it’s a criminal compulsion and is a sick behavior which is largely untreated because they often get away with it even after the arrest.

My mother’s close friend’s daughter came to Jamaica to study medicine in the late 70s - pre cameras and security folks in stores.
Both of her parents were surgeons - she was by no means poor. I didn’t know her but mum asked me to show her around.
I took her to the campus bookstore and discovered later that she had more high end medical books than she paid for. Then days later I took her to a pharmacy. She walked through the aisles singing ‘this I’ll pay for, this I won’t’. I told her I’d wait for her outside. Enough of her shit.
Told mum sorry, I had no plan of being seen with her in public. She was a genuine kleptomaniac - eventually it led to her divorce - the poor man couldn’t handle it. It was always settled discreetly.
