All my life I have been an admirer of the United States and its people. But I am frightened of it now, and I am even more frightened of them.

Nothing mattered, in the end. Not the probable dementia, the unfathomable ignorance, the emotional incontinence; not, certainly, the shambling, hate-filled campaign, or the ludicrously unworkable anti-policies.
The candidate out on bail in four jurisdictions, the convicted fraud artist, the adjudicated rapist and serial sexual predator, the habitual bankrupt, the stooge of Vladimir Putin, the man who tried to overturn the last election and all of his creepy retinue of crooks, ideologues and lunatics: Americans took a long look at all this and said, yes please.
There is no sense in understating the depth of the disaster. This is a crisis like no other in our lifetimes. The government of the United States has been delivered into the hands of a gangster, whose sole purpose in running, besides staying out of jail, is to seek revenge on his enemies. The damage Donald Trump and his nihilist cronies can do to America, but also to its democratic allies, and to the peace and security of the world is incalculable. We are living in the time of Nero.

(72,667 posts)But we do have some very sick people no doubt and their brains are constantly being filled with
right wing racist, sexist, and generational stupidity. And billions is spent on this disinformation
and spreading it. Remember America was founded by racism, genocide, and Christian extremism.
At least 20% of Americans really think the wrong side won the civil war and most of those people
consider themselves "good Christians" too.
btw don't believe for 1 second that Trump won fairly. It was very dirty and right now
powerful forces both inside and outside of America are now and were behind installing
Trump and pushing extreme and unAmerican policies. You are right to be worried because
these are dangerous times.
At least Sweden invented the cinnamon roll and your country has a national cinnamon
roll day.

(62,534 posts)... benefit most from "the American Disease" are also those who dance the most self righteously in criticism about it.
Let's do each other a favor: the US will keep our admittedly self privileged oafs here, and Europe can keeps its self righteous social critics home.
Having worked in high-end resort I've seen the worse from both groups and am disgusted with the finger pointing from both.

(1,073 posts)Thanks for posting this. I go about my business these days and the appearance of normalcy in my country doesnt last for long. Underneath this facade that everythings fine the realization of what we are up against becomes palpable, and I try to do whatever I can to deflect the awful feeling of betrayal that stems from what half of my countrymen have wrought upon us. I will never forgive them, the MAGA voters and non voters alike. Ill do what I can to enable the obstruction of their awful plans; Ive not given up, but I have to admit, its very difficult these days.
Edit for spelling
