(9,550 posts)Sexual harassment and trying to ruin her career and reputation for speaking out. (Think MeToo).
From Time magazine
In the complaint, Lively accuses Baldoni and the studio of embarking on a multi-tiered plan to damage her reputation following a meeting in which she and her husband Ryan Reynolds addressed repeated sexual harassment and other disturbing behavior by Baldoni and a producer on the movie.
The plan, the complaint said, included a proposal to plant theories on online message boards, engineer a social media campaign and place news stories critical of Lively.
Maybe we should offer support and not scorn. This doesnt happen very often in Hollywood and we know who the studio is going to back.

(3,862 posts)She did a lot of TV in the early oughts. Millennial shows.
So she's more than an "influencer".
I have to admit, I think actual actors with IMDB credits and all seem more legit than "influencers."
I know I'm not the age group "influencers" are aimed at, but I wanted to see what these people were doing, and I watched some "Gabbie Hanna" Youtubes, and ....???? Huh?
There are many of these young Youtubers (not so young now) who seem rather mediocre in the looks and talent categories, but are loud and do stupid stunts. I guess it pays well. But they often seem to descend into mental collapse and terminal narcissism.
That said, I do love watching the ones who do "Dollar Tree discount craft shopping" and "20 meals for 20 dollars"! Of course, those are actual topics.
(And it really is amazing what you can make with those dollar laundry baskets.....)

Reynolds and McElhenny throw themselves into this venture wholeheartedly - no hint of being dilettantes. Their involvement pays off handsomely, both for the team and the town.
We binged watched seasons 1 and 2, watched season 3 as it was released week by week, and are eagerly awaiting season 4.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ryan_Reynolds
Ryan Rodney Reynolds OC OBC (born October 23, 1976) is a Canadian and American actor, producer, and businessman. He began his career starring in the Canadian teen soap opera Hillside (19911993) and had minor roles before landing the lead role on the sitcom Two Guys and a Girl between 1998 and 2001. Reynolds then starred in a range of films, including the comedies National Lampoon's Van Wilder (2002), Waiting... (2005), and The Proposal (2009), and the superhero films Blade: Trinity (2004), and Green Lantern (2011).
Reynolds's biggest commercial success came with the superhero films Deadpool (2016), Deadpool 2 (2018), and Deadpool & Wolverine (2024), in which he played the title character. His performance in the first earned him a nomination for a Golden Globe Award. He has since starred in the drama Woman in Gold (2015), the horror film Life (2017), and the action films 6 Underground (2019), Free Guy (2021), and The Adam Project (2022). Reynolds also provided voice acting in The Croods franchise (20132020), Turbo (2013) and Detective Pikachu (2019), in which he voiced the title character.
Reynolds was named People's Sexiest Man Alive in 2010 and was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2017. As a businessman, he holds an ownership stake in Mint Mobile and is a co-owner of Welsh football club Wrexham; the latter is documented in the Emmy Award-winning television series Welcome to Wrexham. In 2020, Reynolds sold his ownership stake of Aviation Gin to Diageo as part of a $610 million deal. He also sits on the board of the Match Group.

(29,796 posts)There's evidence that the male lead/director sexually harassed her and other women on set. It was reported to the studio and nothing happened.
There's even more evidence that the director and studio were part of a PR smear campaign against her in an attempt to ruin her reputation. And looking back during publicity for the movie it appears they worked pretty hard on ruining her.
This is a very big deal. Her husband is a top tier, A list actor. (Ryan Reynolds) If something like this can happen to someone with power and resources how is the average person expected to fight back? That's why this is a big deal. The director showed her unwanted porn regularly and tried adding scenes where she was expected to simulate oral sex on him, none of which was in her contract. When she spoke up he hired a PR firm to viciously attack her- and it worked.
The celebrity part sells the article but it really is about how far can an employer and a coworker be allowed to enact revenge without consequences.

(29,796 posts)Her husband also supports liberal causes both in the US and back in Canada. And his best friend? C'mon! Who takes on a guy whose most iconic role is Wolverine!
Lively is an established actor from a family of actors. Her husband is A List as are his friends. Her BFF has a world tour that sells out in minutes and Grammys.
If someone thinks they can not only sexually harass but then retaliate with a very public smear campaign it sends a message. It tells the average person that they need to keep their head down and accept what happens to them.
I'm not a huge Lively fan. She's just not my cup of tea. This, 1000% support for her and I hope she wins.

(29,796 posts)If what she alleges is true she was put through the wringer. No one should be subject to sexual harassment in the workplace. When she reported it the director and studio retaliated by hiring a PR firm to basically ruin her.
Her husband is A list and they still tried to attack her. Her best friend has one of the biggest tours and they still thought they could attack her. If they can retaliate against an established actress whose married to Ryan Reynolds and best friends with Taylor Swift then how does anyone else feel safe when reporting harassment in the workplace?
I'm happy to hear that she's going forth with the lawsuit.

(432 posts)of a smear campaign that was out to get her. Read The NY Times article linked in post 3 above. Hired PR hacks (disappointingly women) were hired to get out negative stories before her complaints of harassment were made public. Especially sickening is all of the internet influencers who were more than happy to get paid to put out lies about her so her allegations would be undermined. I do remember when all of these negative stories were coming out all at once. I knew little about her so just thought they were true.
This is a truly sickening story about a woman speaking up about harassment and a well organized online campaign to annihilate her reputation so her allegations wouldnt be taken seriously. Just like we saw with 2016 and 2024 elections, the level of lies and propaganda online can overwhelm the truth.
This is just one example of rich men paying to silence a womans allegations to protect themselves.

(7,078 posts)Ill have to see if I can dig up the researcher who discovered this, but it was highly coordinated campaign orchestrated by this PR firm.
Rumors are that its Charles, Camilla, William, and Kate who got the ball rolling in order to deflect negative press off Williams affairs. Its since taken on a life of its own and I doubt theres any coordination anymore.. not needed to be honest. Meghan Markle is thoroughly trashed whenever her name comes up in public now.
Im not a royals watcher so I never followed it that closely, but I was very interested in the outright racism and misogyny directed at her that seemed so over the top it caught my attention.

There's quite a bit of it in the thread when this should be a case DUers should follow.
She's sexually harassed in the workplace. She reports it. The perpetrator doubles down and hires a PR firm to conduct a smear campaign to ruin her career and even question her personal life, including her marriage and being a mother.
(Sound familiar? It's the same firm that ran smear campaigns against Meghan Markle and Amber Heard.)
When you're an established actress, your husband is an A list actor and your best friend is one of the most popular musicians in the world and someone still thinks they can do this? Wow. What kind of message does it send to the average person who doesn't have these resources.

Many women face this.
I thought the film well acted, a good story, visually nice to watch and see some of Boston and the rich lifestyle of those who live there.
I hope the big responses about this lawsuit brings awareness of sexual assault.
The film also touches on gun ownership , teen homelessness and suicide and the need for mental health counseling.
I think Blake Lively was correct in proceding with the lawsuit.

I know it's considered cool to turn up one's nose at popular culture, and to feel proud of having no knowledge of it. But let's not forget that Shakespeare was once "popular" culture. I'm sure there were people in Elizabeth's court who took similar pride at not knowing anything about that Shakespeare fellow.
