3. A couple of ideas to explain it:

1. Knowing Trump, he'd rather "appropriate" real estate rather than pay for it. Even though he'll argue there's a very large federal deficit, he'd find the money to first try to buy Greenland. But that won't happen.

2. So, using a falsehood of a crisis, maybe he'd send the military into Greenland to "protect" it -- from China, who knows? And using American imperialism (if not Israeli MO), the troops would stay in Greenland indefinitely.

3. I don't know how he'd do it, but whatever wealth Greenland has, Trump would want a taste of the action. Leasing out land for excavating the soil for minerals, perhaps even clean, fresh water, would be another source of income for him.

4. And on a non-pecuniary note, I honestly believe Trump likes (a lot) the concept of taking over another country, making its residents part of his kingdom. Greenland would now take orders from Trump, not themselves, not Denmark.

5. Trump likes to prove that he can do something that everyone tells him would be impossible to do.

Exhibit A: The Dobbs decision. Everyone told Trump that it would impossible to overturn Roe and he did it.

Exhibit B: More than 30 years ago, Trump attempted to use eminent domain to get ownership of a small property near his casino in Atlantic City. (He wanted the lot to develop a parking garage for limos to his business.) He first offered the owner, a widow, a pittance of the value of the property, which she turned down. Trump took her to court again and again. He was told it wasn't worth the time and money, but he believed he could wear out the widow. Not exactly. Trump had to abandon his plans and was chagrined that he lost to an elderly woman. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vera_Coking_house

plenty of minerals and oil may be revealed. (bitcoin mining on the scale to fill a bitcoin resserve may finish the oligarch project of melting the ice cap for fun and profit. but that is just my theory)

the real estate reply might also be a good one, again more valuable as the ice melts.

note on exhibit b - it is well known that trump will never take no for an answer.

"if she says no i hear maybe." trump

He wants to be the ruler of the biggest country in the world. He is obsessed with BIG. He said his inauguration had the biggest crowd ever. His rallies are big, bigger than Biden's or Harris's, according to him. BIG is his MO.

He is the world's oldest adolescent boy, comparing his penis to everyone else's. This is what it is all about.

they think its a great idea. They were all giddy about it. Greenland is getting greener, when I tell then that they don't seem to understand. Green also because of its minerals.

(A quick sidebar on the this-is-all-a-strategic-distraction from gun control or immigration, etc., argument: No, it isn’t. Is there anything you have seen in Trump’s time in office that would lead you to believe that he is capable of that sort of strategic planning and execution? It’s readily apparent at this point that Trump is just saying stuff – and then reacting to how those things land with the general public. There is no three-dimensional chess. There’s not any kind of chess being played.)

Donny is all gut instinct, not deliberate strategy. Yes, maybe when he says crazy stuff it has the added benefit (for him) of distracting from other things, but he’s ALWAYS saying crazy stuff and there’s ALWAYS things going on they want to distract attention from. That’s just a built-in feature of Trumpism.

Greenland is not for sale, though the Republican president-elect continues to believe that it's "an absolute necessity" for the United States to buy it.

Trump rediscovers his odd interest in U.S. ownership of Greenland: Greenland is not for sale, though Donald Trump continues to believe that it's "an absolute necessity" for the United States to buy it.

And then, of course, there’s Greenland.

In an item published to his social media platform, the president-elect announced his intention to nominate Ken Howery, the former U.S. ambassador to Sweden, to serve as the next U.S. ambassador to Demark. The statement probably wouldn’t have generated many headlines, were it not for one related point Trump added in the online announcement:

For purposes of National Security and Freedom throughout the World, the United States of America feels that the ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity.

Yes, we’re apparently back to the whole “let’s buy Greenland” thing again......

Blinken added that, as far as the Biden administration was concerned, the United States was not interested in trying to purchase Greenland.

About a month from now, that will apparently change.

It’s not altogether clear why, exactly, Trump sees owning Greenland as “an absolute necessity.” It might have something to do with oil, or perhaps the president-elect has some other undisclosed motivation.

Regardless, the morning after the Republican’s online statement reached the public, Trump confronted news he probably didn’t want to see. “Greenland is ours. We are not for sale and will never be for sale. We must not lose our long struggle for freedom,” the island’s Prime Minister Mute Egede said in a written comment.

If recent history is any guide, Trump will probably ignore the statement. Watch this space.
