While much of the media bends weakly, 'The Guardian' stands firm

'How the Guardian will stand up to four more years of Donald Trump::
'Throughout the tumultuous years of the first Trump presidency we never minimised or normalised the threat of his authoritarianism, and we treated his lies as a genuine danger to democracy, a threat that found its expression on 6 January 2021.

'With Trump weeks away from taking office again – with dramatic implications for Ukraine and the Middle East, US democracy, reproductive rights, inequality and our collective environmental future – it’s time for us to redouble our efforts to hold the president-elect and those who surround him to account.

Trump is a direct threat to the freedom of the press. He has, for years, stirred up hatred against reporters, calling them an “enemy of the people”. He has referred to legitimate journalism as “fake news” and joked about members of the media being shot. Project 2025, the blueprint for a second Trump presidency, includes plans to make it easier to seize journalists’ emails and phone records.

'We will stand up to these threats, but it will take brave, well-funded independent journalism. It will take reporting that can’t be leaned upon by a billionaire owner terrified of retribution from the White House'.

Seems especially critical given the piece is part of a fundraising effort.

If you can afford to help us in this mission, please consider standing up for a free press and supporting the Guardian today from just £1 or $1.

The work starts now.

Hoping their experience carries them over Cleveland into the finals this year. They don't need any acquisitions or trades; they're good to go, though I do think they should rest Tatum more and maybe not rely quite so much on 3-pointers.

Yeah, the Bruins have responded well to that coaching change -- which surprised me, especially after how they had responded to Montgomery in his 1st year. I really didn't think the coach was the problem.

The Sox lost my interest in the last few years as they let talent go, understandably given the salaries, but a pretty drastic let down overall.

And the Pats -- Maye has got me back paying attention. I even streamed the Buffalo game -- minus the turnovers, they played really well. So yeah, looking forward to improvement next year.

I'll be 74 next week. Left MA permanently in 75, but have never stopped being a fan. And still love New England, though I gotta say, Oregon is pretty special too -- my wide and I have been here and raised our kids here since 88.

Go Celtics!

Gotta say that along with The Guardian and ProPublica, the goal of free world knowledge by Wikipedia also gets big yearly donations from me. They've gotten better every year and these days Wikipedia is getting better and more up-to-date faster than most corporate media.

I usually support media. With the exception of ABC, NYT, WAPO, (and the obvious right wing propaganda streams) I have been a defender of our media, especially those media to the left of center. But I’ve had it with the media blaming the Harris campaign and the Democrats for the election and taking no responsibility themselves. The truth is, it wouldn’t make any difference how flawless a campaign TFG’s opponent executed, or how hard grassroots Dems fought. The billionaires like President Musk bought the election and the media helped put him across the threshold in the EC. Our elections are fucked up because of the money involved and the power those influences have over the media. I feel like we’re on our own here, with only independent media to keep us informed. We have to keep our guard up not to end up in our own echo chamber unless we want to end up like the crazies on the right.

...I subscribed. One of the things I've pointed out is how outlets like Faux and The New York Post are used as loss-leader propaganda channels for the right-wing and The Guardian is the only left-leaning media outlet that tries to level the playing field by providing many of its stories outside of a paywall.

Imagine if the filthy rich, and getting richer, billionaire Jeff Bezos decided to see a fearless, independent Washington Post as a counter to the Murdoch factories of lies. This country today has many cowards of historic proportion, but Bezos easily resides among the top five.
