used to break into regular programming on Christmas Eve for a "Special Announcement" from NORAD. (I think that it was the NBC channel.)

Russia was still the Soviet Union then, so the first time they did it, we all stiffened up and listened closely as the TV announcer said that NORAD detected an object flying over the US, driven by a lone man in a red suit, led by what appeared to be flying animals.
