(30,633 posts)I saw a very old documentary about Jawaharlal Nehru, there was lots of support for Russia in the documentary.
The word socialist was added to the Preamble of the Indian Constitution by the 42nd amendment act of 1976
India bought most of their military craft from the USSR and probably still buy from them.
During the Vietnam War, they sided with N Vietnam and the USSR, whereas Pakistan sided with the US.

For India to convert over to Western tech might mean losing out on support for their Russian (incl. Soviet) tech.
