India has become the biggest buyer of Russia's seaborne crude after Moscow's invasion of Ukraine in 2022, with purchases near record highs at 1.8 million to 2.0 million barrels per day, or more than a third of its crude imports.

I saw a very old documentary about Jawaharlal Nehru, there was lots of support for Russia in the documentary.
The word socialist was added to the Preamble of the Indian Constitution by the 42nd amendment act of 1976

India bought most of their military craft from the USSR and probably still buy from them.

During the Vietnam War, they sided with N Vietnam and the USSR, whereas Pakistan sided with the US.

But the sunken-cost fallacy is a nice idea, but has a real-world impact.

For India to convert over to Western tech might mean losing out on support for their Russian (incl. Soviet) tech.

Oopsie.

The sunk cost has tentacles.

And a consequence of the Cold War: Pakistan and India are enemies. America chose Pakistan to support and Russia picked India.
