Lori Mosura goes to the grocery store on a bicycle because she can’t afford to fix her Ford F-150 truck.
The single mother and her 17-year-old son live in an apartment that is so small she sleeps in the dining room. They receive $1,200 each month in food stamps and Social Security benefits but still come up short. Mosura said she often finds herself deciding between buying milk or toilet paper.
It was all that penny-pinching that drove the part-time tax consultant to abandon the Democratic Party this fall and vote for Donald Trump.
“He is more attuned to the needs of everyone instead of just the rich,” Mosura, 55, said on a recent afternoon. “I think he knows it’s the poor people that got him elected, so I think Trump is going to do more to help us.”

Americans Have One Very Strange Cognitive Bias
Or: How I learned to stop worrying and love The People.

YouGov asked a series of questions on “What percentage of Americans do you think are (fill in the blank)?” with the (blank) being all sorts of qualities: black, gay, Christian, left-handed, own a passport, etc.
The results were hilarious. Here are some of the percentages that Americans (on average) think their fellow citizens are:> Transgender: 21%
> Muslim: 27%
> Jewish: 30%
> Black: 41%
> Live in New York City: 30%
> Gay or lesbian: 30%
more...
These perceptions do not square with any version of observable reality. Here the numbers as they actually exist in the real world:> Transgender: 1%
> Muslim: 1%
> Jewish: 2%
> Black: 12%
> Live in New York City: 2%
> Gay or lesbian: 3%
We are talking about errors of perception measured by orders of magnitude. On the trans population, the average American’s estimation is off by 2,000 percent.

(born and bred NCY'r 👍 )
Crowds are mostly in the bigger shopping areas, or by sports arenas, stadiums; days, or nights, along parade routes, big festival days, Universities, sometimes in medium to big parks, tourist areas (which we locals sonetimes visit).
🤔 I think covered most things.

(66,114 posts)Why is she only a part-time tax consultant? Why doesn't she seek a full-time job?
She's 55 and she's depending on food stamps and social security (maybe from a deceased spouse?) to live?! That's crazy.
Does her 17 year old son have a job?
I'm sorry to sound harsh but if she was one of my kids I'd tell her to get off her butt, sell the super-expensive truck, and get a full-time job. And the kid needs to get a job too. And there's nothing wrong with riding a bike to buy groceries.

(1,638 posts)There could be a lot of reasons for what she is going through. Not all of them are laziness. Empathy, my friend. I can empathize with her situation and still feel she is wrong for voting for what’s his name.

(66,114 posts)If she's seeking full-time work, she's not on disability.
I doubt she reads DU. My words are not intended to be hurtful. My words are my reaction to the situation she herself has put herself in. If she doesn't want people to comment, she could have declined to spill her life to the Washington Post.
I guarantee that she will be judged very harshly by people who have had to endure and overcome a lot more hardship than this.
I mean, how much does a Ford F-150 cost? Look it up. I've never had such an expensive vehicle in my life, and I'm self-sufficient with a much higher income - because when I was a single mom I went out and found a full-time job. And I bought things at tag sales. I bought my office clothes at resale shops. And I didn't think that was a problem for Trump to solve.
mwmisses4289
(869 posts)Maybe she, her son, or both have a disability? The job area she is in is going mostly to part time workers so they don't have pay benies? And vehicle parts are expensive, even for diy'ers. Many vehicles built after about 2000 deliberately make it hard for diy'ers to repair them. As for rent, many areas are expensive even for those making a good income.
I have very little sympathy for those who voted for it, as they have displayed their hatred and contempt not only for themselves, but the rest of us and the united states. They will reap what they have sown, and unfortunately they are taking the rest of us with them, while expecting us to save them from themselves and the mess they have created.

(66,114 posts)Preparing taxes requires skill and education. The article says she's been "unable to find full-time work." That means she's not disabled. A person with the math and organization skills to prepare tax filings has the skills for many full-time jobs. How hard is she looking, and is she willing to take a job she thinks is beneath her?
Look up the purchase price of a Ford F-150. Why doesn't she sell it as-is?

(6,783 posts)Places like H&R Block hire them to input tax returns into a computer and charge other poor people money to do so. Easy to get jobs, low pay, not career jobs.
At 55, probably the best she can do. Other jobs, like Walmart, require you to be able to stand on your feet all day. Harder to do as you get older. If her truck is paid for, it's her only asset and she needs it to get to work.
Her situation is bleak, but I wouldn't trash her over it. It may be the best she can do in a very harsh job market.
yardwork
(66,114 posts)Normally I wouldn't trash a poor person but the opening sentence of that article mentions her Ford F-150 and it set me off.
I see all these Trumpsters driving around in huge vehicles and complaining about the price of gas. They can't drive worth a damn, either.

(2,838 posts)...through expanded Medicaid (assuming PA isn't one of the states run by chuds that refused to take ACA funding). The MAGA chud politicians are just thrilled with the opportunity to destroy healthcare for the poor, and that's not something that's easily replaced if it goes away. A lot of full-time jobs have fewer benefits--or no benefits--even when compared to the basic coverage of expanded MA. It's also extremely destabilizing to lose benefits and then have to restart them, particularly if one's entire care network is upended (doctor, clinic, etc.).
