Residents of unincorporated New Castle, Pennsylvania, drove a surge in support for Donald Trump in 2024. Now, they're counting on him not to cut their Social Security benefits, The Washington Post reported.

New Castle used to be a booming industrial town, and a century ago it was a bastion of support for Democratic politicians, said the report: "Before Trump won New Castle, the city had last backed a Republican presidential candidate in 1956, when voters narrowly supported Dwight D. Eisenhower (R) over Adlai Stevenson (D), according to Andrei Pagnotta, a resident who has spent years studying the region’s election results. But the city changed dramatically as factories closed and younger residents moved to more vibrant urban areas ... The city’s population of 21,000 is roughly half what it was during its peak in the 1940s

One resident who plans to switch to the Republican Party and backed Trump despite disagreeing with him on social issues, Lori Mosura, says that she was driven to do so by money being tight. “He is more attuned to the needs of everyone instead of just the rich,” she said. “I think he knows it’s the poor people that got him elected, so I think Trump is going to do more to help us.”


As for her message to Trump now, Mosura said: “We helped get you in office; please take care of us. Please don’t cut the things that help the most vulnerable.”

In this region of Pennsylvania, even the state legislators are now GOP. There has been a heartbreaking shift from Blue to Red in the election results. In my opinion, the voters are more interested in following the Pittsburgh Steelers or the Cleveland Browns than in preserving democracy.

They bought a house in Fl about 2 years ago, and it was damaged by hurricanes this year. They mentioned that ins. wouldn't cover part of the damage and someone said they should contact FEMA. Then they said, "I feel funny asking FEMA for help with this when people in NC got $750.00 and their houses were totally destroyed" I calmly said that the $750.00 was just to help them in the immediate aftermath and the surviors could apply for more disaster help.

45. New Castle was a neighbor to where I lived.

At one time it was filled with big, nice, well kept older turn of the century homes and newer brick homes. It has a large Italian population and is where we went to buy hot sausage and good, rich olive oil and salamis. Now it is a sad reflection of what it used to be with houses needing more than a new coat of paint.
I hate to tell the dumb person they talked to, it was the Dems that just pushed through a SS and retirement bill with only 27 Thugs voting with them. Hopefully the orange one and his cohorts do not try to erase it from law like they want to in order to give billionaires bigger tax breaks.
