The Guardian: Scientists explore longevity drugs for dogs that could also 'extend human life'

The Guardian - (archived: https://archive.ph/pX1Qy ) Scientists explore longevity drugs for dogs that could also ‘extend human life’

Researchers say drugs may be able to increase lifespan by extending health and thus shortening the rate of ageing

Not for nothing are dogs called man’s best friend: they are good for their owners’ mental and physical health, and some studies have shown that if you’re looking for a date and want to seem more attractive, it might be time to get a canine companion.

So what would it be like if dogs could live for ever – and what if that secret could help their owners live longer, healthier lives too?

A number of companies are now finding common ground between the two goals.

Early next year, Loyal, a US biotech start-up, is confident that it will bring LOY-002, a daily, beef-flavoured pill, to market that could give dogs a minimum of one extra year of healthy life.

The San Francisco-based firm has raised $125m (£100m) in funding from companies who have held back from investing in human longevity projects because of the decades those trials would take.

I don't have a medical degree but IMO a dog's (or other animal's) longevity doesn't need this in2herbs 23 hrs ago #4

Already exists, used in humans, and is cheap to produce.

Plus another few years of good health for our furry friends.

All my dogs have eventually died at very advanced ages, partly due to not eating commercial dog food but fresh meat, poultry, fish, veg, grains etc. And don't get me started on gluten/grain free for dogs.

He probably would have lived longer but a loose pit bull dog injured his leg.

His diet - raw beef over kibble.

My two current dogs (half huskies) eat good. - they like their beef cooked a little and they want variety- so they get chicken stew too. I never give them canned food - just beef, liver or chicken over a little kibble. They also love bones.

Now Univ of Wisconsin says dogs baby shots can last a lifetime- so they get fewer shots . They drink clean well water and live out in the country with clean air -

They have a 50’ x 100’ run with lots of trees in their run so thru their doggie door they go in and out whenever and of course - they sleep on my bed.

Because we are living so long we add to all the problems of overpopulation which is a real thing.

Besides, only rich assholes will be able to afford it making it possible for them to fuck up everybody's lives for far too long.

There's something strange about the human ego that makes some think they deserve to live forever.

It's not all that much fun in old age unless you have a lot of resources or are a king or something. The powerful just want power longer and maybe to force their slaves to live longer too... all the better to stretch out the punishments.

I'll pass. The sooner my day on the calendar shows up, the better.
