Vivek woke up the day after Xmas and thought to himself, Let me go posts to my white supremacist followers that; American students are lazy and stupid and Immigrants are smarter because their parents didnt let them watch saved by the bell
They COOKING his ass 😂!

Its a testament to Vivek and Elons arrogance that they really believed they could convince the MAGA morons that importing technical talent was essential to American success.
They should have backed the Democrats if they wanted to appeal to reason.

Watching Vivek, Elon and Sacks try to explain their rationale about importing foreign born talent, to the America First morons, has been absolutely glorious.
The slack jawed MAGA crowd really thinks that you can take uneducated white dudes and train them to become engineers. 🫠

(79,738 posts)The reason top tech companies often hire foreign-born & first-generation engineers over native Americans isnt because of an innate American IQ deficit (a lazy & wrong explanation). A key part of it comes down to the c-word: culture. Tough questions demand tough answers & if were really serious about fixing the problem, we have to confront the TRUTH:
Our American culture has venerated mediocrity over excellence for way too long (at least since the 90s and likely longer). That doesnt start in college, it starts YOUNG.
A culture that celebrates the prom queen over the math olympiad champ, or the jock over the valedictorian, will not produce the best engineers.
A culture that venerates Cory from Boy Meets World, or Zach & Slater over Screech in Saved by the Bell, or Stefan over Steve Urkel in Family Matters, will not produce the best engineers.
(Fact: I know *multiple* sets of immigrant parents in the 90s who actively limited how much their kids could watch those TV shows precisely because they promoted mediocrity
and their kids went on to become wildly successful STEM graduates).
More movies like Whiplash, fewer reruns of Friends. More math tutoring, fewer sleepovers. More weekend science competitions, fewer Saturday morning cartoons. More books, less TV. More creating, less chillin. More extracurriculars, less hanging out at the mall.
Most normal American parents look skeptically at those kinds of parents. More normal American kids view such those kinds of kids with scorn. If you grow up aspiring to normalcy, normalcy is what you will achieve.
Now close your eyes & visualize which families you knew in the 90s (or even now) who raise their kids according to one model versus the other. Be brutally honest.
Normalcy doesnt cut it in a hyper-competitive global market for technical talent. And if we pretend like it does, well have our asses handed to us by China.
This can be our Sputnik moment. Weve awaken from slumber before & we can do it again. Trumps election hopefully marks the beginning of a new golden era in America, but only if our culture fully wakes up. A culture that once again prioritizes achievement over normalcy; excellence over mediocrity; nerdiness over conformity; hard work over laziness.
Thats the work we have cut out for us, rather than wallowing in victimhood & just wishing (or legislating) alternative hiring practices into existence. Im confident we can do it. 🇺🇸 🇺🇸

(4,225 posts)I don't disagree that parents have to let kids be kids (you didn't say that; it's just a cultural belief), but I wholeheartedly agree that parents MUST place children in challenging activities and work hard to spur their curiosity. Read to them when they are babies/toddlers/primary schoolers to create lifelong readers. Wonder aloud with them about how things work or why they are the way they are. Play number games with them! Give all children building sets or microscopes. Teach them to wonder "why" and "how."

He only quit hiring them when it became politically inconvenient.

(7,301 posts)and it has nothing to do with talent. American engineers are still the best in the world. Elon wants cheaper engineers, not better ones.

(51,610 posts)Companies often hire foreign-born talent because an H1B visa is tied to one company. If Alpha Company hires an H1B then the H1B decides to quit because he's being crapped on so badly, the individual has to return to his home country and go back through the process. Americans aren't so constrained.
100% this. Ive worked in major international corporations that absolutely do this for the reasons you stated. The treatment of the boots on the ground workers in these types of corporations is extremely toxic and abusive. The visa holders absolutely take the abuse because the alternative is more undesirable. I had a front row seat for many years, until I got too old, at which point I was discarded like a pile of garbage.

(14,639 posts)OK. VIvek is basically arguing for a meritocracy, rather than "privilege",
say of sons of rich dads achieving "great things" with minds of below average IQ, but having superior criminal skills, or
say of kids who got into college because their dads were rich, or "legacy" or say,
kids whose dad owned a business, like Steve Forbes or Jed York and Mark Davis of football.
And saying that book 'larnin other than THE BIBLE is what America needs.
Wow. He gonna be thrown under the bus real soon.

(4,179 posts)A MAGA Civil War on X between Musk and the far right over H-1B visas
Far-right activists clashed online with billionaire Elon Musk and other supporters of President-elect Donald Trump over the need for a skilled-worker immigration program that has long been a lifeblood for Silicon Valley signifying a potential rift between Trumps core nationalist base and technology executives who have come to support him.
The fight that spilled into public view over the holiday week could preview a wedge within Trumps coalition over how to execute immigration policy, an issue that animated Trumps White House campaign.
Notable Republicans, including former GOP presidential candidate Nikki Haley, championed Loomers position. There is nothing wrong with American workers or American culture, she said Thursday on X. We should be investing and prioritizing in Americans, not foreign workers.
The online feud reflects the challenges that Trump will have holding together the delicate political coalition that delivered him the White House, which included unprecedented levels of financial support from Musk and other Silicon Valley billionaires.
