Vivek Ramaswamy thinks that tech companies are choosing foreign-born workers over American ones because our culture is too chill, too mediocre, and doesnt uplift dorks like him enough.
The former Republican presidential candidate and upcoming Department of Government Efficiency co-lead offered his two cents on the discussion surrounding the future of American-born labor in Silicon Valley.
A culture that celebrates the prom queen over the math olympiad champ, or the jock over the valedictorian, will not produce the best engineers. A culture that venerates Cory from ]Boy Meets World, or Zach & Slater over Screech in Saved by the Bell, or Stefan over Steve Urkel in Family Matters, will not produce the best engineers, Ramaswamy wrote in a lengthy post on X.
More movies like Whiplash, fewer reruns of Friends. More math tutoring, fewer sleepovers. More weekend science competitions, fewer Saturday morning cartoons. More books, less TV. More creating, less chillin. More extracurriculars, less hanging out at the mall.
Normalcy doesnt cut it in a hyper-competitive global market for technical talent. And if we pretend like it does, well have our asses handed to us by China.

(10,551 posts)They are certainly still around, in large numbers. But they are far less busy than they used to be. The main culprit in their demise, if it is happening, is Amazon. Online shopping is hurting them. That being said, there are still plenty of malls left, and lots of people still go there.
I am not sure if it can be said that "hanging out" at the mall is no longer a thing. Perhaps it can be said that hanging out at major gathering spots is no longer as common in general. People do a lot of their socializing in virtual places. But people do still meet up. And if a major mall is nearby, I suspect it is an easy option, and therefore likely still a somewhat common one.
These are just my thoughts. I am interested in hearing yours, if they differ from mine. I am definitely willing to hold open the possibility that my perspective does not fully capture the whole picture of what is currently happening.

(43,046 posts)First there were the open malls--shopping centers-- of the 1950's--Great Western, that had models of the world's great monuments (Eiffel Tower, leaning Tower of Pisa, etc) in the parking lot. There was Northern Lights, with Penney's that anchored it into the 1980's. But then came Eastland, Westland and Northland; compact malls that were covered and temperature controlled all year! Those were the places that killed downtown Columbus, so they built a downtown mall, with Lazarus (later bought by Macy's) as the great center. As we entered the new century, the old malls grew shabby, so there was Tuttle Mall on the westside, Easton on the east and Polaris to the north. New places, up-scale stores...
Great Western and Northern Lights became locals only. Eastland became teen-aged gang territory, You could play football in Northland and Westland without hitting anyone. Tuttle is less than half open--and part of that is Macy's bought two of the major anchors and closed one, plus Sears died of it's own stupidity. Westland and Northland are both gone now--razed to the ground. Gone, too, is the downtown mall, killed by too many "undesirables" (homeless and/or violent) for the owners. Hallmark stores died of natural causes--no one sends cards like they used to. Toy stores collapsed as well (and there is more to the end of small stores than Amazon--vulture capitalism has much to answer for!) There are few teens/young adults hanging where nothing is happening and even the food courts are smaller than they once were. For me, visits to the malls are either "Who affords THAT?" or sad trips of memories in empty spaces. The middle class shoppers are on-line because they can find stuff there. The malls that once were staffed now have people at the register but no one who knows the merch.
The end of malls was slow at first, then very fast. We had them earlier than many, so the passing is already advanced. Your area may be different.

(242 posts)The false narrative that there are not enough engineers has been around for over 40 year.
I call B.S. Yes, engineering is a difficult major, but there are outstanding colleges and universities graduating very smart and hardworking graduates every year.
Some, not all
tech companies are complete jerks:
#1 They dont want to hire anyone but graduates from the top 20 engineering colleges.
#2 They dont want to mentor or train new graduates or people returning to the workforce.
#3 They want to work engineers to near death, thats why so many leave the profession.
#4 Hiring H1B engineers from India is a way to pay less and to keep these foreign born people chained to the jobs.
So , stop the lies.
I know . I have direct knowledge. Retention to the second year and graduation rates have improved.
In 2020, the overall 6-year graduation rate for first-time, full-time undergraduate students who began seeking a bachelors degree at 4-year degree-granting institutions in fall 2014 was 64 percent.
https://nces.ed.gov/fastfacts/display.asp?id=40
Public education in the USA is overall good, not great. There are shortcomings. Remember, public schools accept all kids and some live in challenging conditions. Also, engineering colleges have improved their outreach to enroll first-generation and female students. And there are improvements.
Start hiring young engineers who graduate from tier 1 and 2 colleges
.they are smart, committed and talented.
Republicans blame the schools and colleges and the students, Dont believe their lies. Young workers are good and get the job done.

Yet this irony is not the worst of it. In 2015, there was another sordid affair involving Ramaswamy, over Axovant Sciences Alzheimer's drug. In June 2015, Ramaswamy appeared on CNBC to praise the Axovant IPO, which soared to over $30 a share based on expectations surrounding its Alzheimer's drug, Intepirdine. The drug was touted as a "breakthrough," yet upon closer examination, this development fell apart.
Axovant had acquired the drug for $5 million in December 2014, six months before the IPO, after the majority of Phase 2 trials had "failed to meet their primary endpoints" in 2010. Ramaswamy devised a solution: His mother, Dr. Geetha Ramaswamy, conducted a new Phase 2 trial in 2015 involving "684 subjects." This trial conveniently claimed to demonstrate sufficient improvement to "support Phase 3" trials.
The aftermath was a triumphant $350 million IPO in 2015, followed by a drastic fall. By September 2017, the stock had plummeted 75 percent after Ramaswamy and his mother announced the Phase 3 trial's failure. Subsequent trials continued to disappoint, culminating in a 99 percent loss in value and a name change for the company.
While investors suffered significant losses, Ramaswamy profited from a higher media profile, IPO payouts, and the sale of remaining Axovant assets in 2020.

treating and helping people with Alzheimers and Rama-long a-ding-dong and his brother owned
a business that had that drug so the stock price for that business went up to >160 $s per share and
the brothers and mother sold all of their stock in that company before it turned out the drug was
useless. And they walked with millions and I think both Vivek Ramaswamy and his brothers business
along with his mothers business were just a 2 rented offices next door to each other just north of

They want to mass deport immigrants who they say are taking jobs and resources, eating cats and dogs, and increasing crime, putting qualified white folks in danger.
But theyre down with foreigners taking tech jobs from the qualified white folks that theyre protecting from DEI and from violent immigrants because the qualified white folks are lazy and not motivated enough to gain the skills to fill the jobs.
You cant make this stuff up.
