The news coming out of eastern Europe isn't good these days. Russia is "practicing" attack plans for Finland, Estonia, and Latvia.
Today, an undersea power and internet line was cut. Last week, the US urged Americans to get out of Belarus.
And of course, there was the still unexplained undetectable drone news from the last few weeks.
The news below is translated from Finnish, so there are some rough spots with spelling and meaning
The Government Defence Policy considers it possible that Russia would attack Finland, Northern Norway and the Baltics.
The war in Ukraine has shown that Russia is prepared to take significant risk-taking without caring for losses, the Finnish government said.
NATO sources tell Iltalehti that Russia has been practicing an attack on Finland and other countries on the eastern side of NATO. This analysis shows what a NATO assessment of Russia's threat is like.
Last March, NATO trained to transfer 20,000 troops to northern Norway and Finnish Lapland.

In mid-December, Iltalehti followed the JEF summit in Estonia.
In connection with it, NATO sources told and presented to IL what kind of attack Russia has been practicing in Finland, the Baltic countries and Norway.
The attack would involve a simultaneous attack by several different Russian military forces.
In the north, the 14th Army Corps would attack Murmansk's direction on the Norwegian coast from sea, land and air.
Russians would send their landing troops to Finnish Lapland. Russian missile forces stationed on the Kola Peninsula would also attack Finland.
Tens of thousands of Russian soldiers would take part in the attack.
In Lapland, Russians would, for example, try to take a quick takeover of Ivalo Airport.

The goal would not necessarily be a breakthrough in Finlands hinterland, but to take over the northern coast of the Gulf of Finland and southeastern Finland. In this way, the Russians would tie the main forces of the Finnish Defence Forces and make it difficult to support Estonias defence from the direction of Finland.

NATO sources said Russia's 6th Army would attempt a breakthrough in Estonia and Latvia with a massive armour, artillery and missile attack. The aim of the attack would be to take over the capitals of Tallinn and Riga.
The Russians would attack Lithuania through Belarus. The aim would be to gain a land link between Kaliningrad and Belarus, which belongs to Russia, the so-called Suwalki corridor. If the operation were to succeed, NATO forces fighting in the Baltics would be at risk of being geographically mooted.
Russia would try to make their position more difficult by attacking Finland's southern coast.

Russian in 2017 in its Zapad exercise to attack Norway, Finland and the Baltic countries. The Russians have not abandoned their offensive plan but want to implement it after the war with Ukraine. The plan, to our knowledge, still exists, and the Russians have not given up their desire to implement it," the source said.

NATO sources tell Iltalehti that Russia has been practicing an attack on Finland and other countries on the eastern side of NATO.
Sources estimate that Russia would pursue the limits of peace in Turku from 1743. In that case, Russian offensive forces would run all the way to the Kymi River. Further north, the goal of the attack would be the Puumala Strait.
The threat assessment estimates that Russia would like to have a buffer zone for itself:
Russias security thinking shows the pursuit of strategic depth and the quest for creating a unified buffer zone in Europe, from the Arctic through the Baltic Sea and the Black Sea to the Mediterranean Sea.
According to NATO's threat assessment, Russian missile attacks would also target Helsinki. The main direction of Russian attack would be in the Baltics.
In his annual propaganda performance on December 19, Vladimir Putin said Russia has "enough forces and means of restoring all its historical territories."
In the past, Putin has told the ideal of an 18th century Russian Empire. Sources say Putin's speeches should be viewed literally. Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania would be at risk, but also southeastern Finland.

The advisory highlights the risks for US citizens, including the arbitrary enforcement of local laws by the Belarusian authorities, the risk of detention, and Belarus's support for Russian aggression against Ukraine.
The US Department of State also reminded that consular services for US citizens in Belarus are unavailable following the closure of the US Embassy in Minsk on February 28, 2022. This means that individuals with dual citizenship may be denied consular assistance if detained.
The Belarusian government may also close border crossing points with Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, and Ukraine without prior notice. These actions increase the risks for foreigners who could become stranded in the country.

(1,227 posts)Where would Russia get the equipment for "a massive armour, artillery and missile attack"? They have hardly any of that stuff left -and very, very little of any quality due to Ukraine demolishing so much of it.
The only reason Russia would want to fight NATO -which an invasion of Norway, Finland, or Latvia would require- is if Russia wanted to commit national suicide.

(35,056 posts)killed and wounded are 3/4 of a million. Who is attacking Finland?
If need be, the Finns can call up a million soldiers to fight.
