Anyone older was a "woman." I've noticed that basketball uses the same standard, high school teams are "girls' basketball" while the pros are "women's basketball." And Gaetz was with a "girl" who had just finished her junior year in high school.

Thats one year short of being an adult. Not a child.

Girl, maybe a better term.

But if she enrolled in the military at 17 everyone here would probably want her called a young woman.

Same for a 17 yo guy.

Near adult. Near adolescence.

Probably the best description would be under age female.

At the same time, if she got pregnant by Gaetz and wanted an abortion or transition and her parents and others objected to letting a child make a decision like that, she'd immediately be a "woman."

Only 6 states list it at 18. There is no federal age afaik.

What the feds were looking at was trafficking, not pedophilia.

Florida could have prosecuted, but florida. Its 18 in FL.

Under age in FL is not the same as sex with a child at any rate. The charge in FL probably would have been statutory rape. So he would be a rapist if convicted.

But to call a 17 year old a child is a stretch. Jmo of course. Most 17 year olds, and especially those living on their own, are much closer to adult than child.

Since she couldnt technically consent. She wouldnt even be able to press charges, the state would handle that.

But if i remember the story correctly, he flew her to the bahamas for the events, so it would fall under their law.

Unless he had sex with her in fl. Which isnt clear.

Trafficking would have been the right call. He transported her across staye/country lines to engage in sex for money.

Her age would have been a factor, but not the deciding one. She could have been 24 and he would still be guilty.

Thanks garland.

Many states have 16 years as that age. Many have 17 years. A smaller minority puts the age at 18.

Those are the laws. And that complicates all of this. Personally, I'm uncomfortable with ages of consent under 18, but if you look at this Wikipedia page, you'll see that most of the country sets that age to 16 or 17.

They do it all the time.

It’s a feature, not a bug.

That's another media favorite.

" 'I was in fear for my life', Officer Friendly stated later, referring to the stick the fearsome pre-teen playground user was holding at the time."
