If you're planning a trip to Istanbul, avoid Turkish Airlines!
Looks like the airline is handling it really well.
When she reached out to Turkish Airlines to file a complaint, the airline demanded a doctor's medical report before it would investigate the incident. In addition, Bourgeois said that Turkish deleted her flight history from the airline app and offered 5,000 miles as compensation.
Offering a 10% discount on future travel is absurd.

(811 posts)We found some on sealed boxes at a self-storage unit. We steam cleaned the boxes and inspected everything stored inside. We check all mattresses in hotels before settling in.

A HERETIC I AM
(24,658 posts)That's a rather strange take on my post.
I put it up because it is an interesting and unusual story and also reflects the callous disregard for customers by a major company that is all too often displayed by large firms the world over.
I am relating a news story, nothing else. Sure, I added some editorializing, but I don't think it is any more "over the top" than any other story.
And for what it's worth, news items of various animals and bugs wreaking havoc on airplanes happen all the time.

(31,180 posts)They get in your clothes and carry ons. And who knows, maybe in the baggage hold?
My son and his wife had them. It can cost alot of $$$$ to get rid of them.

Get a bedbug proof mattress cover, they are less than $100. The bugs live in you mattress, because you are their food source. The cover stops them. It can save you potential thousands.
A HERETIC I AM
(24,658 posts)and stayed in hotels all over the place. I've been pretty lucky I suppose. I've been staying in hotels on an off all my life, and regularly as part of the jobs I've had since the late 1980's, but I have only had maybe 2 encounters in all that time. I had one specific bedbug episode that will live with me forever!
It was in a hotel in Chattanooga. I felt them crawling on me before I felt the itch of the bites. Using a plastic drinking cup I caught 2 or 3 of them on the bed and took them to the front desk at about 2 in the morning. I had a fairly early wake up (I really didn't sleep much after that) and got to the front desk to check out around 7:30. They had an exterminator waiting there for me to leave! The manager was all apologetic and offered me free lodging whenever I came back through town. Needless to say, I never went back.
I did get bitten in a couple different places and each one was 3 bites. The articles I read about them called that distinct pattern of bites "Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner"!! They frickin itched for days afterward.
I'm as careful as I can be when I am in a hotel these days. Never set my luggage on the floor, the bed or any furniture, only the countertops, check the mattress for evidence of them, etc.
I never really thought about a plane being infested though!
I read one of the reasons they seemed to go away for several decades and now they're more common is because DDT was used before and was very effective. But we all know how bad that shit turned out to be.

(35,121 posts)if every hotel and motel would put all the mattresses in a bedug cove, they could all but eliminate this threat. Compared to the cost if they do get an infestation, it's a bargain.
A HERETIC I AM
(24,658 posts)I feel pretty safe in the higher end brands, I must say. Never had an issue in a Marriott, Hilton or IHG property. But you're right, often the best solution is the simplest one.

(35,121 posts)any hotel can get them from the guest before you.
When you check in, put your luggage in the bathroom and look at the seams along the bottom of the mattress. That is where they live.
