Xi just stated that he's not going to engage in any more tit for tat tariffs. He also said that American goods are no longer "viable" for his country.
So trump has single handedly lost a huge market for American farmers. Gone.
This of course flies in the face of trump's happy talk of making a "deal" with China. They're sick of this crap and not going to take it anymore.
To those asking for a link it was at the beginning of Katy Tur's show on MSNBC. Apparently, the substitute for Tur was referring to a Wall Street Journal article with the headline "The U.S. and China are Going to Economic War-- and Everyone will Suffer". She then added that Chinese officials added in statement that after this they are done going tit for tat, and then quoted an NBC News article in which the Chinese ministry said "Given that, at the current tariff level, U.S. exports to China are no longer commercially viable," and "China will not respond to any further tariff hikes..."

(13,195 posts)China is the largest foreign debt holder. I doubt he would cash their bonds because it would also have global economic impacts, but Trump is such an ignoramus that he is just completely economically clueless. Its all about his ego and sole power to raise markets one day and crash them the next. Most foreign investors will just wash their hands of US investments.

(51,966 posts)Trump knows nothing about economics and doesn't have the good sense to consult people who are experts. Just imagine how all powerful he must feel right now, far more so than in his first term. He does or says anything and the whole world reacts. He is like some maniacal villain in a children's cartoon.
I think he must be having the best time of his entire life, plus he can golf whenever he wants on the taxpayer's dime. No one dare oppose him or he'll wave his magic wand and destroy them. It is probably more power than he could have ever dreamed of.

(7,396 posts)that's gonna get us all killed. He can't come down to earth and see and hear what is truly reality. He has to live in this make believe world where he's the most genius of all geniuses. The only way to deal with him is to not deal with him on any level. Xi recognizes this, and so do most, if not all, of the other countries. China could come close to burying us, economically, if they really want to do that. And I wouldn't blame them at all. In fact, it could be construed as "saving face" an idea that's most important to them. Other than certain South Africans, I don't think there's a single person in the world with common sense who've not been insulted and demeaned by trump... and no one worse than we Americans, ourselves.

(8,604 posts)high that the answer is yes although in a roundabout way product does make it to China. For example in the case of commodities like soybeans the Chinese will continue to import what they need but it will be by way of companies from Brazil etc. But those companies will buy supply from the US at a reduced price because of a depressed market.
So it is not US soybeans going to China it is Brazilian for example because of the purchase. There are also "paper swaps" that take place so that the goods don't actually land in Brazil and then get reloaded on a boat to China. Paper changes hands and things get rerouted in transit. The penalty to US farmers for example is that they end up with a payment to them that is lower than what they would have gotten before all of this. The taxpayers may be forced to accept the burden of greatly increased farm support payments as well.

(413 posts)Quick primer: The Stock and Bond markets most always operate inversely. When the stock market goes up the bond market goes down and vice versa. When stocks are booming investors move money out of safe, but low yield bonds and into higher yielding stocks, sending bonds lower. When stocks go wobbly, investors move money into the safer bonds and the bond market goes up. That wasn't happening earlier in the week stocks and bonds were both going down because US bonds weren't being viewed as a reliable safe haven anymore. That scared the shit out of Trump. Canada (with Japan and EU standing shoulder to shoulder) showed the world how to quietly stand up to the bully.
https://deanblundell.substack.com/p/carneys-checkmate-how-canadas-quiet]
China could probably make the same move. Between China proper and Hong Kong, the Chinese hold around 1.1 trillion in US bonds. Trump will bluster on like he always does and his mouth pieces will spin the propaganda web, but all that debt in the form of US bonds is a choker collar if he gets to far out of line. (too bad it isn't a muzzle)

(11,090 posts)China responded to the White Houses latest tariffs move against the worlds second-largest country, lifting its rates on U.S. goods and vowing to resolutely counterattack and fight to the end.
Chinas finance ministry suggested the country wouldnt keep escalating tariffs as the current 125% levy means no market acceptance for U.S. goods exported to China. The ministry added: Even if the U.S. continues to impose higher tariffs, it will no longer make economic sense and will become a joke in the history of world economy
If the U.S. continues to play the tariff numbers game, China will ignore it. However, if the U.S. insists on continuing to substantially infringe on Chinas interests, China will resolutely counterattack and fight to the end.

When you go to a swap meet or flea market, you'll find things made in China, more expensive than before the tariffs, but cost enough to be affordable. Expect a lot of RV's on the south and northern borders. Not to mention a lot of boat owners taking short trips to Canada and Mexico.
There is a point where you tariff so much, you inadvertently create an underground market.

As far as the tariff tiff. Some people are claiming that China just walked into a trap, while others are claiming he (Trump) is quite insane. All I know for certain is; I/we are going to have to deal with the ramifications. I prefer to make fact based decisions.
I dont see Brazil having the ability to fill the void. As it stands now. China only buys 50% of our export. Which amounts to around 11% of all exports to China (which are overwhelmingly agricultural). I like our position on the soybean front. India alone could make up that difference.
I dont waste a lot of my brain power judging the right and wrong of decisions that I have no control over. I try to reserve it for dealing with the fallout from said decisions.
