Haunting 1938 LA Times editorial

Quoted in “Behold America! A history of America First” by historian Sarah Churchwell.

“Most people spend little time analyzing political events or studying history, democracy
will always risk being shaped by voters’ feelings rather than analysis. If feelings overruled reason,
they could convert our country from the most advanced in the world to one of the most hysterical, irrational and backward nations in a short period of time.”

We are now hysterical, irrational, and thoroughly backward to quote the article.

Social media is driven by feelings not rational analysis. Posts that elicit strong feelings trend. Until our culture learns how to real in social media we're screwed.

First thought was that more available information would equal more awareness and an intellectual populace.
But with the explosion smartphones coupled with social media it seems that it’s going in the opposite direction. We tend to prefer fictitious stuff over factual by a mile!😖

Most people don't have the luxury to spend time analyzing political events or studying history, democracy, etc.
Too busy trying to stay afloat.

Behold, America is an enthralling book, almost a primer for the ferocious dialectic of US politics, inspired by the events of 2015/16. It will no doubt take an influential place on a teeming shelf of Trump-lit. Much of its force derives from the echoes of the present it finds in the thunderous caverns of the past, blurred by the distortions of history. Passionate, well-researched and comprehensive, it is both a document of our times and a thrilling survey of a half-forgotten and neglected dimension of the American story – a tale full of sound and fury currently being narrated by an idiot.
