Breaking on MSNBC: Israel in Talks to Send Gazans to South Sudan

South Sudan? This doesn't sound good to put it mildly. David Ignatius (NYT) said he was in despair and doesn't think the Israel govt. has a plan. He can't envision how this will ever end.

What they are doing now is far beyond protecting itself and as a reaction to Oct 7th.

Palestinians are not Hamas and they need to also have a homeland. Like a place they have lived for a very long time.

There. See. That's easy.

What Israel has done to Palestine before and after October 7th goes WAY beyond retributions for Oct 7th and has done little to nothing to get rid of Hamas but has impacted thousands of innocents.

South Sudan “firmly refutes recent media reports claiming that the Government of the Republic of South Sudan is engaged in discussion with the State of Israel regarding the resettlement of Palestinian Nationals from Gaza in South Sudan,” the foreign ministry said in a statement on Wednesday.

It said the claims are “baseless and do not reflect the official position or policy” of the South Sudanese government.

while Gaza has a bit over 2 million meaning that this would be a population increase of 1/6th. That seems to be awfully difficult to absorb. That would be as if the US absorbed over 50 million people. Doable, yes, advisable no.

It is recovering from a civil war with a serious risk of it restarting.

South Sudan is calling for United Nations help to deal with the 3rd-country deportees Trump sent there. The only "plus" for South Sudan is having a government too weak to refuse.

The Trump and Netanyahu have also approached Libya (in an active civil war), Somalia (a recovering failed state), Somali Land (an unrecognized state) and Sudan (in an active civil war).

Quite a few more. I won't even start.

I'll just say that a discussion of doable vs advisable in relation to population density not only misses those points but seems like a way to start to normalize something that is way out of bounds morally, legally and specifically with regard to Palestinians and their history.

Next thing you know certain people will jump in and try to convince us it's the "humanitarian" thing to do - mirroring the Israeli far-right's propaganda. Lol, as if no one saw THAT coming.

Violent crime, including kidnapping, murder, armed robbery, home invasions, car-jacking, and sexual assault is a significant problem throughout South Sudan, both in urban and rural areas. The economic situation has led to a significant increase in both petty and violent crime.

In 1999, British Gas (BG) discovered the existence of natural gas in the Gaza Marine fields, 20 nautical miles off the coast of Gaza, at a depth of 610 meters below the surface. Further exploration by BG through two successful wells — Gaza Marine 1 and Gaza Marine 2 — determined the field could contain up to 1 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. (EgyptOil-Gas.com, April 5, 2018)

Map of the Levant Basin Province.

The Palestinian Authority was “granted” the right to exercise sovereignty over its own maritime territory by the Oslo Accords in 1995. Four years later, following the findings of the offshore natural gas, the PA gave the international consortium BG a 25-year, 90% stake in a license to explore, develop any discovered fields, and install the required infrastructure. Since that time Israel has consistently blocked this development.

In 2002, the PA approved BG’s proposals to construct a pipeline to a processing facility in Gaza. However, the Israeli state delayed this development, arguing that the pipeline should run to an Israeli-controlled port, and that Palestinians would have to supply Gaza Marine surplus fuel to Israel at far below market price...

Six officials have confirmed it to the AP while the South Sudan government denies it. Of course. But what a strange coincidence this is:

The office of Israel’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Sharren Haskel, said she was arriving in South Sudan for meetings in the first visit there by a senior government official, but she did not plan to broach the subject of moving Palestinians.

I'm sure she's there to talk about something else entirely.

Joe Szlavik, the founder of a US lobbying firm working with South Sudan, said he was briefed by South Sudanese officials on the talks. He said an Israeli delegation plans to visit the country to look into the possibility of setting up camps for Palestinians there. No known date has been set for the visit. Israel did not immediately respond to a request for confirmation of the visit.

Szlavik said Israel would likely pay for makeshift camps.

Edmund Yakani, who heads a South Sudanese civil society group, said he had also spoken to South Sudanese officials about the talks. Four additional officials with knowledge of the discussions confirmed talks were taking place on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss them publicly.

Two of the officials, both from Egypt, told AP they’ve known for months about Israel’s efforts to find a country to accept Palestinians, including its contact with South Sudan. They said they’ve been lobbying South Sudan against taking the Palestinians.

--Snip--

The AP previously reported on similar talks initiated by Israel and the US with Sudan and Somalia, countries that are also grappling with war and hunger, and the breakaway region of Somalia known as Somaliland. The status of those discussions is not known.

https://www.cnn.com/2025/08/13/middleeast/israel-in-talks-to-resettle-palestinians-from-gaza-in-south-sudan-ap-intl

Oh well, as long as the South Sudanese government denies it, some of us can close our eyes in pretence/naivete - or perhaps worse - and deny it's happening. Until it becomes undeniable, which is then followed by silence or justification.

I definitely see a pattern.

relocation effort could violate international law.

https://foreignpolicy.com/2025/08/13/israel-netanyahu-gaza-displacement-palestinians-south-sudan/

".... “All those who are concerned for the Palestinians and say they want to help the Palestinians should open their gates and stop lecturing us,” the Israeli leader said.

Where these civilians might go, though, remains unclear. Sources familiar with ongoing negotiations told The Associated Press on Tuesday that Israel is in talks with South Sudan about potentially resettling Palestinians there. Similar proposals have been floated with other governments, including those of Indonesia, Libya, Somalia, Somaliland, Sudan, and Uganda.

.... However, foreign leaders and rights experts warn that a Gaza-wide displacement scheme could violate international law and have vast humanitarian consequences that Palestinians fear would be akin to a repeat of the Nakba (or “catastrophe”), when around 700,000 Palestinians were expelled from the region in 1948 to make way for the creation of an Israeli state. Egypt, in particular, has stressed that any effort to transfer Palestinians out of Gaza could spark a surge of refugees fleeing into its own territory.

.... Israeli authorities have suggested that Israel plans to begin taking total control of Gaza City in October, though expanded operations in the city have already begun. On Wednesday, Israeli bombardments in Gaza City killed at least 123 people in just 24 hours..."
