He's now threatening to pull FIFA out of Seattle

He’s big mad “we” (I don’t actually live in the city limits) elected a progressive mayor. With the FIFA head literally standing behind him he called her names and said he was strongly thinking of changing the venue. The head replied something on the order of “hamanahamana” and so far no local reply. Of course plans are well under way and both FIFA and local businesses would be badly harmed. I doubt the blowhard will do it but I’m sick to death of him waving his little dick around and making people afraid to do their jobs. He cannot be gone soon enough.

I won't care at all, in fact I will celebrate more, longer and harder the second I hear he is dead than I would if the USA miraculously won the World Cup itself.

Actually I just think he’s blowing his usual smoke but they can do things that would make it very difficult and cost millions. What I expect is an ICE infestation that interferes with a lot.

that he has no say in that issue. The cities and states do. If I was the head of FIFA I would have pulled all the games out of the US back in the summer or last year after he won the presidency.

Fuck Trump. He doesn't even like Soccer.

Is he pulling NYC's games over Mamdami?

it's probably not completely within his power to determine where the World Cup matches take place.

I'm not super-familiar with the inner workings of FIFA, but let me tell you a story about the recently concluded World Gymnastics Championships in Jakarta Indonesia. Basically, the FIG (Federation Internationale de Gymnastique) had a difficult time finding a location to host in a "down" post-olympic year, but the local organizing committee from Jakarta eventually submitted a bid that was found acceptable to FIG. Visas were issued for the athletes and visiting fans and journalists. Until suddenly about two weeks before the competition, Indonesia revoked the visas of the Israeli delegation. At the last minute moving the competition, disrupting the travel/accomodation plans of so many, was deemed not feasible, so the competition went forward. (And, since FIG apparently has Cold-War era wording in its bylaws that said if any qualified participants were denied visas, their Executive Committee was required to vote on whether or not the competition would be cancelled, there is now yet another gymnastics lawsuit going through the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Switzerland.)

Okay, I got a little carried away with that description. But how the CAS looks at the authorities and responsibilities between FIG, the Indonesian government, and the Indonesian local organizing committee might have some similarities to FIFA's World Cup. Trump's presser was nominally to brag about some expedited visa process for World Cup tickethclders. That would be something where the federal government is working with the local organizers to facilitate the event. So his power trip (extortion?) might consist of killing that cooperation and/or any security assistance that might have played a role in the local organizing committee's arrangements to host the event. Any decision to move the event elsewhere would likely be entirely up to FIFA, I would imagine, with the fans, journalists, and teams having to adjust their arrangements accordingly.

Not quite right. In reality, Trump has ABSOLUTELY NO POWER (that's ABSOLUTELY ZERO!) to determine where the World Cup matches take place. The World Cup is run by FIFA and part of their process of determining what country hosts the World Cup is setting the specific city/stadium locations of the matches. Trump has zero authority in this matter. FIFA theoretically could require a match be moved for good cause, but a President throwing a hissy fit over the political persuasion of a city is NOT good cause.

As I understand it, Trump has no control over FIFA unless they break a law. They are a private business and Trump can no more move them then he can a football league.
