Thune fires back at House GOP effort to repeal senators' $500,000 damages provision

Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) poured cold water Wednesday on an effort by Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) to repeal a provision buried in the government funding bill that Congress passed last week that would allow senators to sue the Justice Department for surveilling their activities.

Thune argued the provision to give Republican senators standing to sue the federal government for $500,000 in damages was narrowly drafted to apply to the Senate, implying the House doesn’t have any business butting into his chamber’s affairs.

“We’ll see what the House does, but I will tell you that that was designed — that was a Senate-specific solution. The statute that was violated applied only to the Senate, which is why we addressed it the way that we did,” he told reporters at his weekly press conference.

“We strengthened that provision when it comes to allowing a federal government agency, the Justice Department, in this case, to collect information, private information, on individual senators. We think that is a violation of powers under the Constitution,” he said.

There is no way 500,000$ is justified.

We, The People, can't sue The Justice Department for the same thing because of Sovereign Immunity.

Is that right?

And wouldn't The Justice Department have to go to a Court to get permission to wiretap, with probable cause and all that?
