This is the story behind Trafalgar Squares famous Christmas Tree🎄
Each year, London is gifted a magnificent Norwegian spruce from the forests surrounding Oslo. Towering over 20 metres tall and 5060 years old, this tree is carefully selected months - even years - in advance. Norwegian foresters fondly call it the queen of the forest.
The felling of the tree takes place in November during a ceremonial event attended by the Lord Mayor of Westminster, the British ambassador to Norway, and the Mayor of Oslo. After traveling by sea and then by lorry, a specialist rigging team erects the tree in Trafalgar Square using a hydraulic crane. It is then decorated in traditional Norwegian style with vertical strings of energy-efficient lights, signaling the start of Londons Christmas countdown.
This year marks the 78th anniversary of Oslos annual gift to London, a token of gratitude for British support to Norway during the Second World War. The tree will stand proudly in Trafalgar Square until 5 January 2026, the Twelfth Night of Christmas, before being recycled.
Will you be stopping by to see this iconic, historic festive treasure this season?
