I'd like to see it renamed "Trump Memorial Detention Center," actually.

is to start from the assumption that any video you see on the Internet is fake. Then look for evidence that it is not fake.

The Internet is being flooded with AI video slop, and 2026 will be worse than 2025. In the past we could generally assume that if there was a video of something, it was likely true, because it was very difficult to fake video in a convincing way. That time is unfortunately over.

prime real estate from, idk... 96th to 72nd street on 10th avenue. Nice Hudson view highrises, all residential.

It used to be called Trump Village. A sprawling complex of dozens of skyscrapers bearing the Trump name. No more. His name is so toxic that even the wealthy in NYC cannot abide living in something bearing his signature.

NYC is the best. When he finally dyes, I have a $100 that the 8.5 million simultaneous orgasms will turn the city into crystal as we ascend to a higher plane of existence.

'cept now I'm in Florida.

And see all the shadows of former Trump signs. Each and every removed. It warms the soul.

I'm a Washington Heights kid. Had the honor of teaching in the same public school district that taught me.

I figure I have another 2-3 years until I finish my dissertation, then I'll return to NYC and civilized society. Going to hate having to ask my subletters to leave...

W 161st St, then 172nd St, then just below 187th St, where I used to walk to 🥰 Ft Tryon Park from there.

My main school's were PS 174, and JHS 143.

What are you writing your dissertation on?

I went to PS/IS 187, then taught at MS 324 (the IS 90 campus on 168th Street).

Fort Tryon was my stomping ground. I can give a pretty good tour of the Cloisters.

I am a neurogeneticist. I will be describing the role of serotonin in mosquitos with regard to their host-seeking/blood-feeding, mate seeking, and egg laying behaviors. Basically I am in the process of making a mutant mosquito that cannot produce serotonin, then I am going to catalog any aberrant behaviors it has. We've done this sort of thing in mice before and it produces highly aggressive, slightly dumb mice that bully other mice. I am expecting to see more "bold" mosquito behaviors, likely taking 2nd blood meals.

Typically, when a mosquito gets a full blood meal, you'd expect them to turn kinda shy and cowardly, because biting is the riskiest part of their behavior, especially when they are already equipped with all they need to make eggs. I suspect my serotonin mutants will more boldly bite because they have an overactive "aggression" circuit.

The science is ongoing*. I'm a teacher first and a scientist second. Soo... I can talk about this stuff all day.

*I am not very adept at the technical aspects of working under a microscope to inject mosquito eggs with nanoliter level volumes of chemicals.

Thanks for asking. I can talk more if you are interested.

PS -- Oh and my mom and grandmom were school aids at PS 132, the Juan Pablo Duarte School

That does sound tricky! Nanoliters! 😄
You can tell me a little more now. You can tell me eventually how your serotonin-less mosquitoes act.
It sounds interesting to see the (potential) changes in behavior, as was seen in mice. Ohh boy... more aggressive, bullying, but somewhat dumber mice.
🤔
Now I'd be interested in why they became dumber, as well!
(Hey, maybe u-know-who is deficient in serotonin? Alright, he's not so dumb, but incredibly ignorant in so many ways. And, of course, we know he's a bully!)

I quickly read about how the female stores the sperm, but needs blood to produce eggs.
I only got a few bites per year, while my poor sister was a semi-magnet for them.

Looked on the map to see where PS/IS 132 is.
I went to JHS 143. I'm sure I met kids from 132.
PS/IS 187 is where I went to vote!

I can give a pretty good tour of the Cloisters.

The Cloisters is an interesting structure. Like the interior courtyard. Not the biggest fan of Medieval Art.
I don't know if you knew of the Medieval Festival but that was a cool event to go to!

I loved to walk through the main gardens, then go sit under the tree grove in the Ft Tryon proper. So beautiful, and relaxing!

The females storing sperm makes the genetics especially difficult because you have to make sure that there are no males in a cage of virgin females. So you have to separate them as pupae and to most novices they look very similar. I am not quite there yet.

Serotonin is an incredible molecule. Older than nervous systems. It is involved in communicating nutritional states and evokes behaviors in response. In human pop psychology, we associate it with mood. Specifically we associate higher levels with good mood because drugs that amp it up seem to reduce symptoms of depression. YET drugs that reduce serotonin sometimes also reduce depression. It also tends to involve tilting the brain into making decisions, i.e. increasing impulse tolerance. That is why in depression pharmacotherapy you always have to worry about the side effects of suicide. Before the serotonin levels adjust to the new baseline, you end up with severely depressed patients motivated to do something.

So, our understanding of serotonin is really spotty. It is everywhere in biology but no one really knows its fundamental role. In humans it is responsible for blood vessel tone as digestive movement, but also mood, memory, sex, disgust, fear, compulsion, and classical psychedelic experiences.

In terms of why they become dumber -- I should add a caveat. Dumber in certain ways. I think it is likely just a product of having fewer "dials" in the brain and so their entire behavioral apparatus is somewhat blunted. The social aggression stuff is the most well documented and to me, interesting. Serotonin seems to play an important role in determining where you "feel" you belong is a social hierarchy.

I have my pet hypotheses, but it is a fascinating molecule. Much more than the "mood molecule" is it portrayed.
