A resignation and call to conscience at company owned by Maga billionaires

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026/jan/30/uline-worker-resigns

Uline employee says she can no longer work for people who helped 'America descend into fascism'

When Laura Wittmann decided this week to submit her resignation from Uline, the giant office supply company owned by two of the biggest donors to Donald Trump's 2024 election and other Maga Republicans, she did not hold back.

"As America descends rapidly into fascism," Wittmann wrote in a two-page company-wide email sent on Wednesday, "I can no longer work to grow the personal fortunes of people who helped make it so."

Working for the multibillion-dollar privately held company had become untenable for the 32-year-old Canadian in the aftermath of the recent killing of Renee Good, a mother, and Alex Pretti, a VA nurse, by border patrol agents in Minneapolis, she told the Guardian in an interview.

. . .

In a disclaimer included in the letter, she said her statements about Liz and Dick Uihlein, the company's founders and owners, were based on her own opinion, and that all claims about their political relationships and donations are alleged. She urged people to Google their record.

"The most insidious form of evil is that which hides behind outward decorum, concealing the violence of its intent behind written policy, monetary donations, and old-fashioned principle. It's easy to see the evil of those who are outwardly violent, tactless, and crude, but it's harder to see the evil of the frail old man and his wife, who comes around once a year to rearrange our paintings," she wrote.

. . .

Meet The Billionaire Couple Pumping Their Fortune Into Right-Wing Politics

In the last election cycle, the Uihleins put more than $70 million into various conservative causes. Thirty million went into Restoration PAC and Americas PAC, which in turn spent $18 million trying to get Donald Trump reelected. Another $27 million went to the free market-oriented Club for Growth super PAC, a favorite of fellow billionaire megadonor Jeff Yass.

The Uihleins’ passion for politics permeates their business, too—even company catalogs. In between praise for her employees and listings for boxes and bubble wrap, Elizabeth Uihlein poses provocative questions: Is America in decline? Is China taking over? Are we spending too much on welfare programs? “Your family, your house, your yard, your own little corner of the world—these are things you can control and make better,” she wrote in one letter. “You can’t fix everything—the world’s problems are big.” But with enough money, you sure can try.

about the company.

Subsequently, I receive huge, hardcopy catalogs from them in the mail on periodic basis.

When this started happening, I would browse through the catalogs, and I noticed that buried inside each catalog, was a one page diatribe of right-wing grievances, written by Liz Uihlein.

I remember that I then sent the company a brutal, scathing email which expressed my displeasure. I stated that they would never again see one dime of my money, and that I would be spreading the word about what pieces of shit they are.

The dumb fucks continue to send me catalogs to this day. I'm assuming that my email never reached anyone very high up on the company food chain.

but for awhile, I would seek out and read Liz's nonsense.

Holy cow...I can never understand what compels business owners to tie their political bullshit to company marketing materials. Seems to me like a good way to lose a large portion of your potential customer base.

I got in an email war with Angie's List once too, when I found at that they advertised on Rush Limbaugh's show. Several emails back and forth, with the company representative trying to justify why they advertise ad nauseum on his show.

I remember that email war got very heated, because they wouldn't just shut the hell up. They kept responding to me, telling me I was wrong.

speculation on my part, but it is possible that it is similar to Marginally Taylor Greene resigning from the House, after she checked her bank account to see how much she made on what would be "insider trading" by you or I. AOC said Greene made $6 million on weapons investments. I suspect both could afford a comfortable life boat to leave the sinking ship of this administration.

I used to buy supplies for a small company. U-line catalog would often have what we wanted but I could get it locally for a lot less.
