That was in the 70’s and I remember it well..running around getting sworn statements notarized for healthcare, credit to buy a car or my first home. Nope. Not backing down

Had to have his permission for a checking account and for the pill.

A grown woman having to have a permission slip like some little kid going on a field trip.

Men were so afraid women were going to save up their money ( that they likely stole from the husband they reasoned)and take off leaving them or cheat on them with the freedom of the pill. It's always all about the men and their fears of being left alone.

10. I remember them telling me I had to have an affadavit from my husband

allowing me to license the car when we moved up here to KS. I want to tell you, I threw one hell of a hissy fit... and I DID walk out there with license plates for my cars THAT afternoon, and without my hubby showing up. I had just turned 30, been through all the crap with my ex-husband, and swore no man or authority would ever treat me like a second class citizen again.

So, here I am at 70, and the whole country treats us like second or third class citizens!

They constantly push the ridiculous narrative that "they are the protectors of women". "They will protect women from scary immigrants, and from transgender girl athletes", and they are feeling dejected because all these women are destroying and disproving their imaginary and wrong belief.

12. Yeah, I remember too

I remember not being able to get a loan of any kind. Dad wouldn't cosign on anything; not even a student loan. Ir was only for our MRS degree, after all. I remember being told by both parents, separately, that this was best achieved by never letting the guy know I was smarter than they were.

I remember that taking a scientific or professional major in college was stealing a seat from a deserving male student.

I remember having to buy a car by looking in the used car section of the paper and going by bus to a strange guy's driveway with cash to check it out. Hilarity did not ensue. And if the car was junk, as it often was, or if he didn't have title paperwork to give you, you got yelled at as you left to take the long bus ride home. If you were lucky.

I remember that when I got married, there was still no federal law declaring spousal rape a crime. When you married, depending on the state, you could literally give up all rights to bodily autonomy. He could make you do whatever he wanted, whenever he wanted. And beating a wife was considered a 'domestic' issue to be dealt with in the home. At best, police told the guy to take a walk around the block to cool off. And then they left. They had real crime to deal with. The churches and the families were no better.

I remember when Minneapolis was working towards its first battered women's shelter and a legislator was outraged that there might be funding for 'a home for runaway wives'.

I remember that almost no households, that I was aware of, could manage economically without the wife working as many hours outside the home as she could spare, depending on child care needs. The husband still expected to come home to a hot meal, clean laundry, clean house, and clean kids. He had the night off. She was expected to stay up as late as it took to be sure that everything in the house was handled to his satisfaction.

Gee, I wonder what radicalized us.

I remember a cop telling me that I should just go somewhere until he sobered up. That was even after the law supposedly changed and the cops were supposed to take them in and book them. My daughter was a teen then and still talks about that.

And My thinking was, "WOW, he must think I'm all powerful".
So I went with it.
At that point, he was out of our life.

My Mommy had to come sign my papers to get into University. My Daddy had to watch me vote by standing in the booth with me. I had to take a parent in to the bank for a withdrawal of MY OWN MONEY THAT I EARNED. My younger brothers were old enough to do all that then they would give me what I needed and I paid them back. My YOUNGER brothers.
