(11,850 posts)I was there in 2019 before this madness happened. It was built over a thousand years ago not too long after the Rus of the area converted. I also saw the Babi Yar horrors as well. Paid my respects there too.
Kyiv was massively underrated city in my travels. I liked it there a lot. I hope it can be free of the Putin menace and have some peace again.

(44,460 posts)Saw St. Sophia, St. Michael's and the Pechersk Lavra. Stayed on the Maidan that was the scene of the protests in 2014. A phenomenal history that rivals Rome and Paris in terms of culture, art and beauty.

(11,850 posts)As the other poster below stated, its like a time capsule inside
the soviets almost bulldozed it. More of a museum now. The Lavra area is active of course. That was an enormous space
incredible
.as you know
On the weekends I walked about 12-15 miles per day exploring. The long park overlooking much of the city was great - and thats where I walked many of those miles! I remember, the footbridge crossing the Dnieper where people were bungee jumping
the island in the river on the other side had a pretty good beach for being in Kyiv! No plans
just left the hotel and walked in general directions! I could go on and on
Lavra took more than half a day
.that was my biggest recommendation to people until the war started.
