The Trump administration cited three reasons for its request, according to a source with knowledge of the matter:

Such strikes harm the Iranian public, a large portion of which opposes the regime.
Trump aims to cooperate with Iran's oil sector after the war — similar to the approach he has taken with Venezuela.
The strikes could trigger massive Iranian retaliatory attacks on energy infrastructure across Gulf states.

Between the lines: Iran attacked Gulf energy facilities with drones earlier in the war, but did not cause significant or irreversible damage.

The U.S. concern is that a new round of strikes on Iranian oil could change that calculus — and send prices even higher.
A source familiar with the details said Trump views strikes on Iran's energy and oil facilities as a "doomsday option" — something to be held in reserve only if Iran deliberately attacks Gulf oil facilities first.

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), one of the Republican Party's most vocal supporters of the war, also criticized the Israeli strikes on the fuel depots.

2. After 10 days of bombing and destroying Iran,

Senator Graham has thought about the long term consequences of the military actions. He should have considered some of this while he was cheerleading for the war.

The Iranian people may eventually control their country, but I don't think that the United States will be getting the same deal that Venezuela gave Krasnov. Some Iranians want a secular country, but the damage we've done will turn them against us for generations.

This is the problem with this relationship. Israel is the client state, not the USA. If we had any President in this country that actually leads, they would TELL Israel what to do and cut ALL funds to them if they don’t.

7. Israel is always going to put its own national interests first

I suppose that's because they are always prepared for an attack.

The reasons the US cites are actually credible, but Israel will do what it thinks is best for itself. Isreal is interested in destroying Iran's capability to do it harm. If that means destroying military targets and critical non-military infrastructure, that's what they'll continue to do.

Trump is interested in the daily stock market and gas prices shooting up in the US. Israel doesn't care about either of those things.

Our interests might well align with Israel's much of the time, but not always. The latter is the nub of the problem as the US backs Israel regardless.
