Trump suddenly goes from being long time toxic to his handpicked candidates to suddenly starting rack up win after win in a sinking economy and unpopular war, with his poll numbers through the basement. Makes me wonder if this isn't a dry run for the generals in November.

For another, I think this is more what you see in primaries when you have a cult following as a politician.
I actually think running against IQ47's hand-picked candidates may turn out better for us once November rolls around.

Trump is a massive drag on his party, and to win, many Republicans will need to show some independence from the deeply unpopular President.
Trump wont let them do that. Cross him, and he could turn on you. Its too late for Trump to run a primary challenge against someone now, but he could attack them on social media, depressing turnout among the MAGA base, or cut off funding from his array of well-heeled Super PACs.
We are seeing this dynamic play out in the Senate, where Trump is trying to force Republicans to take the politically suicidal step of spending upwards of a billion taxpayer dollars on his asinine ballroom vanity project.
A smarter, savvier, less megalomaniacal leader would give his party the room to do what they need to win.

(2,111 posts)As someone else noted, Trump is still very popular among Republicans. It's everyone else he's becoming toxic to. He will likely eventually lose his power among Republicans especially if we take both the House and Senate much like George W Bush fell after it became clear he was seen as a problem.

He is winning these places becsuse those voting are mostly Republican.
During the general election is when most people turned off by him will vote. This will include all of the low info casual voters that voted for him and are upset with him now.
