New Boeing 787 Dreamliner collapses while parked at the gate

A nearly new Lufthansa Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner suffered significant damage after its nose landing gear reportedly collapsed while parked at the gate at Frankfurt Airport.

The incident forced the cancellation of Flight LH450 to Los Angeles as crews assessed the damage and according to reports, no injuries have been reported so far.

Cabin crew and ground staff were on board and several were injured and were receiving medical treatment, the airline said.

A Lufthansa Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner tipped onto its nose at Frankfurt Airport on Thursday injuring several staff, the German airline said.

The incident occurred at 12:45 pm just before passengers boarded the plane which was scheduled to fly to Los Angeles.

"While the aircraft was parked, the nose landing gear unexpectedly retracted," a spokesperson for the airline told the AFP news agency.

6. Two possibilities

The landing gear should be locked when down. Two possibilities IMO:

1) The lock failed. This is unlikely, but possible. The locks are usually very strong, and give a positive in-cockpit indication when engaged (three down and locked, as they say).

2) Maintenence error. The lock was incorrectly installed or maintained. The most likely culprit is that the maintainer reused a component, probably a bolt, that is intended to be replaced, but either didn't have a new one (looks good to me!), or was trying to save a buck.

They got very lucky it didn't collapse prior to it coming to the gate.

12. I mean during routine maintenence, not at the gate.

The lock is usually a a pivoting piece that when fully extended locks the gear in the down position. This lock must be in place to get a "green" gear indication in the cockpit. BUT, the lock itselft is held in place by bolts, and there is usually a pin that holds the lock in the "down" position. These are wear items that are replaced on a schedule. The pins or bolts could have had a material failure, but more likely they weren't replaced on the proper schedule. That happens more than we'd like to admit. It's fortunate this happened at the gate and not on a landing.

Too automated.
The windows shaded out to black under airline control. No way to unshade them and get a view. I love looking out the window, and strongly prefer natural light to cabin lights. Selected a window, and got the equivalent of a curved wall. We took off in the early AM, and by the time the window was unshaded, it was night again.
Over 10 hours of overpriced claustrophobic hell.

Sorry that people were injured, but very happy that it happened on the ground, assuming that it would have been catastrophic if it occurred in the air.
