ADEM fines Alabama Power over ash pond pollutants

Alabama Power will pay a $250,000 fine to the Alabama Department of Environmental Management after groundwater monitoring detected higher than allowed levels of pollutants from the now-closed Gadsden Ash Pond.

The company says there’s no indication the pollutants have affected local drinking water sources.

After Alabama Power analyzed multiple ground water samples from 18 monitoring wells around the ash pond at Plant Gadsden, it found two wells recorded exceeded standards for arsenic, and one well exceeded standards for radium in one sample.

The wells in question are on the side of the ash pond furthest from the Coosa River.
