What is indicted Pickens Co. sheriff doing on his mission trip to Brazil?
The indicted Pickens County sheriff is on a mission trip in Brazil this week with his Alabama church, which he was charged with defrauding as part of a scheme to personally pocket state money intended to feed inmates at the county jail.
Pickens County Sheriff David Abston resigned June 14 as part of a plea agreement after being indicted on nine counts of wire fraud and filing a false tax return. He pleaded guilty to two of the nine counts. That ended 32 years in office for the sheriff.
Despite being out on bail and awaiting sentencing, federal prosecutors and the U.S. Probation office agreed to allow him to leave the country to go on the mission trip to Brazil. Abston has previously been on a mission trip to Brazil, and went on one to Honduras last year, his friends say.
So what kind of work is Abston doing in Brazil?
