Gov. Robert Bentley: Interim senator must support Trump

WASHINGTON – Gov. Robert Bentley said Friday that whoever he appoints to replace Sen. Jeff Sessions must be committed to carrying out President-elect Donald Trump’s agenda and capable of winning a statewide election to keep the seat.

Trump on Friday said he’ll nominate Sessions, the Republican from Mobile, to be U.S. Attorney General. If he’s confirmed, Sessions would resign from the Senate and Bentley would pick an interim replacement.

Bentley was in Washington Friday for meetings with Republicans in Alabama’s congressional delegation, many of whom are considered contenders for the appointment.

Bentley, in an interview, said he would not appoint a caretaker, or someone who would just hold the seat temporarily and not run for election. He also ruled out appointing himself.
