Dear Democratic Underground,
It’s been an emotional, but enlightening day.
Dr. Christine Blasey Ford delivered heartfelt and courageous testimony, showing herself to be every bit the credible, brave survivor we thought she was and assuring the Senate and the country that there is no case of mistaken identity here – she said she is “100%” sure that Brett Kavanaugh is the person who assaulted her as a teenager.
Then came Brett Kavanaugh’s testimony.
In Kavanaugh’s testimony, including his opening statement:
He yelled and stormed, over and over again, about how he wanted a Judiciary Committee hearing “the next day” when Dr. Blasey Ford’s allegations became public. But, instead what the American people got was a deeply flawed “he said, she said” spectacle -- something that Judiciary Committee Republicans could have avoided if they insisted on a full and independent investigation and on calling outside witnesses who could shed critical light. Not only did Kavanaugh refuse to request an independent investigation by the FBI, he totally evaded answering the question about why he wouldn’t want such a full investigation if he was being truthful and was confident in his defense. In fact, he stubbornly resisted the notion of an FBI investigation every time he was asked about it!
He gave airtime to wild right-wing conspiracy theories (saying efforts to stop his confirmation were “revenge on behalf of the Clintons”)…
He devoted a good portion of his opening statement to a partisan rant against Democrats, which alone should DISQUALIFY him from hearing any number of cases as a Supreme Court justice or circuit court judge.
Republican senators on the committee were arguably even worse, aggressively pushing the narrative that the allegations by Dr. Blasey Ford and others are part of a partisan hit job, a well-orchestrated conspiracy to torpedo Kavanaugh’s confirmation in the 11th hour… it’s an outrage.
First, any notion of an “11th hour” is artificial. We are still a month away from when the National Archives said they would be able to respond to the committee’s document request. But Republicans want him on the Court ASAP.
Also, the timing of Dr. Blasey Ford’s identity being revealed, in relation to when she had initially brought her allegation to the attention of her member of Congress, was not part of some calculated strategy, it was due to concern over protecting her anonymity which was Dr. Blasey Ford’s desire. Republicans made clear they have no interest in respecting the right of survivors to protect their own privacy -- they whipped Dr. Blasey Ford's reasonable request into a dark conspiracy theory to distract from her powerful testimony.
This sham process has gone on long enough.
Kavanaugh has NO credibility. Dr. Christine Blasey Ford does. And the Republicans won’t let anybody else testify. To steamroll serious consideration of her allegations and ram Kavanaugh’s confirmation through under these circumstance would be an unforgivable affront to sexual assault survivors everywhere.
Call your senators right now. Tell them there are only three options left.
Demand an FBI investigation and total stop to the confirmation process until one is completed.
Demand that Kavanaugh's nomination be WITHDRAWN.
