Third update: Please see this annoucement for updated details.--------------------
Second update: image hotlinking has been disabled again. Please see this annoucement for details.
--------------------
Update: image hotlinking should now be working again. Thanks for your patience.

Original message:
We are currently making some software patches and as part of the process image hotlinking is temporarily disabled. This means that if you paste the URL of an image into one your posts, the image will NOT display like it normally does -- instead you'll just see the URL.
Once the patches are complete, things should return to normal and any image URL you posted will display as an image again.
We apologize for the inconvenience -- thanks for your patience while we work on this. Hopefully it will not take too long.

(10,008 posts)that curiously ominous post this morning from a new DUer? Since removed, it was entitled "Nice forum you got here".
This person registered yesterday, has/had 50 some posts since and appeared to be examining DU for vulnerabilities. They seemed to be knowledgeable, wrote intelligently and apparently was able to log another poster out after being challenged. Shades of election day 2016.
If legit, I don't know why they didn't take their concerns directly to the administrators rather than post publically in The Lounge. That was weird.
As it stands, this whole episode was somewhat unnerving and a hat tip to all of you who do the nuts and bolts stuff behind the scenes.

(22,639 posts)The good news is that the person was actually trying to be helpful, although the fact that they posted the issue publicly did cause a bit of a stir. But they drew our attention to something that needed fixing, and they have been in touch with Elad while he works on it.
A HERETIC I AM
(24,635 posts)And his curious thread.
I thought that was a rather strange way of doing things, as if he was posting on a board full of IT experts.
Anyway, glad you guys got the heads up.

(32,017 posts)I am glad to hear it because I interacted with that person and hoped, quite sincerely, that my doing so would not cause significant damage.
If said person helps us eliminate a vulnerability, I am glad.
