Judges deny requests to block DOJ from monitoring polls

by Ella Lee - 11/05/24 8:31 AM ET

Federal judges denied two states’ requests to bar the Justice Department (DOJ) from dispatching lawyers to monitor adherence to federal voting rights laws on Election Day.

Both Missouri and Texas asked federal courts to keep DOJ lawyers away from their polls. Missouri’s attorney general and secretary of state said any monitoring would “displace state election authorities,” and Texas’s attorney general contended that “Texas law alone determines who can monitor voting in Texas.”

"Gov. Sanders will not permit the Department of Justice to improperly intimidate or unduly influence Arkansas voters which would be a violation of state law," spokesperson Sam Dubke said.

And in Missouri, where Republicans banned federal monitors in 2022, a spokesperson for Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft said the secretary will "again reject any push by the DOJ to interfere in Missouri elections."

Orval Eugene Faubus (/ˈfɔːbəs/ FAW-bəs; January 7, 1910 – December 14, 1994) was an American politician who served as the 36th Governor of Arkansas from 1955 to 1967, as a member of the Democratic Party. In 1957, he refused to comply with a decision of the U.S. Supreme Court in the 1954 case Brown v. Board of Education, and ordered the Arkansas National Guard to prevent black students from attending Little Rock Central High School. This event became known as the Little Rock Crisis. He was elected to six two-year terms as governor.

Woodrow Wilson Mann, the mayor of Little Rock, asked President Eisenhower to send federal troops to enforce integration and protect the nine students. On September 24, Eisenhower invoked the Insurrection Act of 1807 to enable troops to perform domestic law enforcement. The president ordered the 101st Airborne Division of the United States Army to Little Rock—initially without its black soldiers at the request of the Department of Justice—and federalized the entire 10,000-member Arkansas National Guard, taking it out of Faubus's control.[

Win Rockefeller. A great man. Defeated Faubus and started Arkansas down a liberal path including Dale Bumpers, Rob Riley, David Pryor, Joe Percell and a little known back water guy named Clinton, then Jim Guy Tucker. Followed by the death of Arkansas Liberal era the original Huckster.

The legislature passed a partisan law that applies only to Harris County allowing them to administer the election. Republican cheating by refusing to allow people to vote or cancelling their mail ballots for minor reasons will be rampant to protect Cruz.

They can easily note problems with access for people with disabilities and any efforts to intimidate and suppress the vote from outside. Plus those who are prevented from voting can report any problems directly to them.

Harris County was one of the original 7 counties on the list – as is my county, Hays.

Ken Fuckin’ Paxton. What a corrupt douchebag. If there’s a lawsuit against the federal government when Democrats are in control, 99.99% of the time, this asshole is behind it.

Why isn’t he in jail, yet? Under indictment for about a decade (for securities fraud, IIRC).

Paxton can fuck off. When he gets there, he can keep right on fucking off.

The part that allowed DoJ monitors to monitor federal elections in states. Now, if the states refuse to allow it, DoJ has to get a court order.

This is part of the VRA USSC gutted.
