Whitehouse seeks to 'reassure' world at climate conference

Source: Politico

The final U.N. climate summit of the Biden era is due to kick off next week amid gloom from many in the environmental community over the election of Donald Trump. But a top Democrat will be there to “reassure the international community that large swaths of the U.S. remain committed to steering the planet away from climate catastrophe.”

This pledge from Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.), the chair of the Senate Budget Committee who has used his gavel to link climate change to economic calamity, comes days after Trump’s resounding victory and with Republicans on track to retake control of Congress.

It also comes as green advocates fear the new balance of power in Washington will lead to a rollback of environmental regulations and the end of climate leadership on the world stage.

“Cracking down on methane leakage, decarbonizing our economy, and combatting sea level rise are firmly on my agenda for COP29,” said Whitehouse in a statement to POLITICO’s E&E News. “But we can’t ignore that Donald Trump, Republicans, and their fossil fuel mega-donors are aiming a torpedo at the climate progress Democrats have made in the last four years.” He added, “We will not give up the fight for climate action and against the fossil fuel corruption that’s soon to take power in Washington.”

Senator Whitehouse is either naive or just likes a good challenge. Baku is floating on petroleum. You can smell the oil stink as you step off the plane! The COP29 President-Designate**** is a wheeler dealer big petrol fucknut. This is a doomed conference. Whitehouse might just not want to acknowledge that as yet. No wonder Kerry quit. And very few world leaders are going to show up. tramp will very likely not attend COP all during his term..while he still has a pulse.

Mukhtar Babayev, the COP29 president-designate, has a notable connection to the oil industry, having led Azerbaijan's state-owned oil company, SOCAR, for nearly 25 years before serving as the country's Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources. This leadership choice has drawn attention and criticism from climate advocates due to Babayev's extensive ties to the fossil fuel sector. This follows a similar pattern from previous conferences hosted in fossil-fuel-reliant states like the UAE and now Azerbaijan.

We literally do NOT have the time be to dealing with conservatism, science denial, and regressive policies anymore, least of all this fucking incoming administration. Not only should this not be happening, it is happening at the absolute worst time in history for it to happen. This all feels like a sick joke.

don't tell people that the shit that is about to happen won't taste all that bad

DJT is going to make solar and wind illegal or at the very least way more expensive. The EPA will be headed up by a climate denier, NOAA will no longer exist. Permits for new wind farms will be denied. Grid tied solar may soon be illegal. Who the fuck are we kidding with happy talk?

Obviously not a majority, and unfortunately not the ones we voted into power.

I'd rather he go and state the hard truth rather than spew some made up sunshine and rainbows lip service BS.
