KYIV, Ukraine (AP) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Monday that he's open to the potential deployment of Western troops in Ukraine to guarantee the countrys security as part of a broad effort to end the almost three-year war with Russia. The deployment would be a step toward Ukraine joining NATO, Zelenskyy said in a post on his Telegram channel.
But before that, we must have a clear understanding of when Ukraine will be in the European Union and when Ukraine will be in NATO, Zelenskyy said. His proposals tread a delicate diplomatic path amid international efforts to find a way of ending Europes biggest conflict since World War II at a time when Russia has gained an upper hand in the fighting.
U.S. President-elect Donald Trump is seeking to bring about a ceasefire and met with Zelenskyy in Paris on Saturday. But Zelenskyy said Monday that he would approach outgoing U.S. President Joe Biden about Ukraines possible NATO membership because he's still in office, while Trump doesn't yet have legal rights to decide on the matter.
The possibilities of Ukraine joining the 32-nation military alliance and of Western troops being stationed on its soil have been deeply divisive and contentious issues since Russias full-scale invasion began on Feb. 24, 2022.

(305 posts)He didn't want NATO or western troops in Ukraine? Maybe if it doesn't include eastern Ukraine (annexed by Russia)?

(10,706 posts)There won't be any Americans on the ground. Trump will have withdrawn from NATO's integrated military command (as France did in 1966) or from NATO itself.

(971 posts)...will be Ukraine having to cede territory to Russia, as well as the potential restoration of Russia's economy, which is teetering on the brink of ruin. Once again, the U.S. will lose credibility by giving allies the impression we're going to be there for them only to stroll away. It's happened to the Kurds, Afghans, and now it looks like it's going to happen to Ukraine, a country we helped convince to give up their nukes for "security guarantees". Why in the world would Iran or any other country decide to end its nuke program in the face of the U.S.'s consistent abandonment of prospective partners?
Assad is in Moscow because Russia couldn't commit any more resources to his government to keep it from collapse. The bravery and perseverance of Ukraine helped make that happen, and I'm pretty sure they can expect no more significant help from us. It almost never fails that missed opportunities like this come back to bite this country.
