Top 'Washington Post' editor kills article on deputy's departure

As the Washington Post newsroom awaits the appointment of a new top editor, its acting news chief intervened to block an article about the departure of its second-highest-ranking editor, a contender for the position, according to several people with knowledge of events.

Managing Editor Matea Gold, a veteran of 11-and-a-half years at the Post who has built up deep loyalty among staffers, had been herself considered a top internal candidate to run the newsroom. According to associates, it became clear that Post Publisher and Chief Executive Will Lewis was poised to pass over her.

She is instead headed to be second-highest ranking leader of the New York Times Washington bureau, as the Times announced today.

The internal tensions over the selection of the Post's new executive editor are capping a series of crises for Lewis, including tensions over the paper's reporting on its own issues.

This is a piss-poor article that doesn't give a lot of details but sure makes a lot of interferences. Perfect for social media but not for those looking for real information. There are a lot of reasons stories get yanked. For one, newspapers are very self-conscious about stories on themselves. As the story says, there have been "tensions over the paper's reporting on its own issues." That's not horribly surprising. It happened a lot in newspapers back when I was working for one. Is the killing of the story connected to the editor's transfer? The answer certainly isn't clear from the article.

And from the last paragraph: "Murray took responsibility for the decision not to have the Post cover this latest development about its leadership, despite the ramifications for the paper. An editor with whom he spoke told colleagues that Murray had not read the planned article on Gold but said to "pin it on me" if anyone asked why it did not run."

This NPR article almost treads into Fox territory. It's pretty sad.

5. I have been a longtime WaPo subscriber but will cancel the subscription next year when it expires.

I started seeing concerning changes after Bezos bought the Post, nothing big at first but definitely slanting more to the right. Later came the hiring of new opinion writers, several of them from Murdoch’s vicious WSJ writers. The Post absolutely excoriated Biden day after day for the Afghanistan pullout and refused to let it drop long after other media did. In addition, their coverage was slanted to Biden making all the mistakes without mentioning Trump’s role in freeing 5,000 Taliban fighters—the very ones who killed US soldiers during the evacuation and took over the government.

With Murdoch’s Lewis now at the head, the Trump toadying is getting serious. This may be my imagination, but I think even known critics of Trump (like Eugene Robinson and Jennifer Rubin) are writing less criticism of Trump, though some is still there, and more general opinions about what Democrats should be doing. If this is the case, I suspect they’re being told to tone down any Trump criticism.

Another big thing I’ve noticed is that the comments have been taken over by MAGA. I used to enjoy reading the comments because a lot of people posted intelligent comments that helped broaden my knowledge. Some of that still happens, but there’s a lot more gloating, Biden bashing, nasty comments about Harris, and repeating of utter lies.

It’s sad to see a once great paper become another Republican mouthpiece.
