Congress would get pay raise if lawmakers pass government funding bill

Source: Scripps News

Posted 1 hour and 50 minutes ago

Tucked inside a more than 1,500-page government funding bill is a pay raise for members of Congress. The average member of Congress earns $174,000 a year — with party leaders earning more.

Members of the House of Representatives and Senate have not received a pay raise since 2009, which is why some say a cost-of-living adjustment is overdue.

However, Rep. Justin Golden, a Democrat from Maine, said he would vote against the bill because of the raises. "Congress should be working to raise Americans' wages and lower their health care costs, not sneaking new member perks into must-pass legislation behind closed doors," he said in a statement.

If the funding bill passes, members of Congress could receive a raise of up to 3.8%, or about $6,600 annually.

The caveat here that is unfortunately not being mentioned, is that there is a Constitutional Amendment that requires that such a "raise" not go into effect until the FOLLOWING Congressional session -

27th Amendment

Amendment XXVII

No law, varying the compensation for the services of the Senators and Representatives, shall take effect, until an election of Representatives shall have intervened.

6. Fuck Golden. He's more a Republican than a Democrat

Which is not unusual - he was a Republican on Sen. Collins staff for years. He became a D only to run for office.

Congress salaries have been capped at $174,000 since 2009.
Doing 3.8% now for 2025 is reasonable.

They should pass a minimum wage boost while they are at it.

but agree that they do need a raise - mainly because they are responsible for paying for their staff...

DC's not cheap.

I think there's a sort of Congressional barracks, but they don't tend to like using that.

yet many, if not the majority, of them leave congress with loads of money in the bank - some of them millionaires. Curious.

They get a raise every time a lobbyist enters their office and every time they enhance their bank accounts with insider trading. I am sure there are many loop holes that they benefit from that we know nothing about.
I'm just saying.......

Oh, sorry. I almost forgot. Hard working low paid workers don’t deserve a raise of the minimum wage.
