Government funding plan collapses as Trump makes new demands days before shutdown

WASHINGTON (AP) President-elect Donald Trump abruptly rejected a bipartisan plan Wednesday to prevent a Christmastime government shutdown, instead telling House Speaker Mike Johnson and Republicans to essentially renegotiate days before a deadline when federal funding runs out.
Trumps sudden entrance into the debate and new demands sent Congress spiraling as lawmakers are trying to wrap up work and head home for the holidays. It leaves Johnson scrambling to engineer a new plan before Fridays deadline to keep government open. Republicans must GET SMART and TOUGH, Trump and Vice President-elect JD Vance said in a statement.
The president-elect made an almost unrealistic proposal that combined the some continuation of government funds along with a much more controversial provision to raise the nations debt limit something his own party routinely rejects. Anything else is a betrayal of our country, they wrote.
Democrats decried the GOP revolt over the stopgap measure, which would have also provided some $100 billion in disaster aid to states hammered by Hurricanes Helene and Milton and other natural disasters.

Trumps sudden decision to make new demands sent Congress spiraling as lawmakers are trying to wrap up work and head home for the holidays. It leaves House Speaker Mike Johnson scrambling to salvage a new plan, days before Fridays deadline to keep government open.
Republicans must GET SMART and TOUGH, Trump and Vice President-elect JD Vance said in a statement. The president-elect made an almost unrealistic proposal for a continuation of government funds along with a much more controversial provision to raise the nations debt limit something his own party routinely rejects.
Democrats decried the GOP revolt over the stopgap measure to keep federal offices running. House Republicans have been ordered to shut down the government, said House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries. And hurt the working class Americans they claim to support. You break the bipartisan agreement, you own the consequences that follow.

In a phone interview with NBC News, Trump said getting rid of the debt ceiling entirely would be the smartest thing it [Congress] could do. I would support that entirely.

(1,621 posts)We all know most republicans will bend their knees and kiss the ring, I just hope the Democrats are willing to standup for the things they know are best for USA. If by chance any republicans get a backbone, they can leave the party and join the Democrats, they will have 2 full years to show they want what is best for USA, and as a democrat , I am not afraid to vote for a republican turned democrat if they truly stood up during our time of need.

(2,471 posts)in which Republicans have controlled the House. Democrats aren't going to start giving in now. However, as of January 3, Republicans have the majority in the Senate as well, then as of January 20 Trump is President, so anything that is done at that point is 100% on Republicans. Johnson is going to have to ignore Trump and Musk and pass what they already agreed to or make a different compromise to pass something with Democratic votes (which Trump and Musk will still object to) or else the Government will shut down until at least January 20.

Coming from Florida I too get the knife wounds often from people who are determined to make us feel like crap about where we live. But, bless their hearts, you never mind them. We both know that there are plenty of good democrats in our states as well as theirs. Keep up the good work and Ill think about yaall next time Im up that way.

It's going to get messy. And there will be no rational way the blame for that can be shifted to Dems.
It will become clearer next year who in the clown circus of the Trump administration are slavish obeyers to Trump's insanity, and are prepared to trample the Constitution and past protocols.

(144,283 posts)because that $100 billion in disaster/hurricane relief funds are designated for RED states (FL, NC, SC, GA, TN) and GOP members from those states (most loudly Lindsey Graham and Thom Tillis) have already threatened to torpedo ANY bill WITHOUT that money.

Southern State Republicans draw the line at disaster relief
As House Republicans go back to the drawing board to try to satiate Trump's demands, it's clear they'll have to balance them against all-out insistence from many Senate Republicans that billions in disaster relief remain tacked to this bill.
Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham, whose home state of South Carolina was deeply impacted by Hurricane Helene, said he will vote against a funding bill that doesn't include relief for his and other affected states. He called it a "moral imperative to get money into the system."
"We've got to have the disaster relief. I can't go home and play like it didn't happen," Graham said. "To anybody who thinks that disaster relief is pork, come to where I live and see what happened in my state in North Carolina and Georgia."
Sen. Thom Tillis, R-NC, whose home state was affected by both Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton, said he'd do everything in his power to slow down the passage of any government funding bill that doesn't include funding for relief. "I feel very strongly. [If] we don't get disaster in the bill I'll do everything to keep us there until we do," Tillis said. Tillis said he spoke with VP-Elect Vance Wednesday and said Vance "gets" the importance of disaster aid.
