Luigi Mangione is set to appear in court in New York on Monday for arraignment on state murder charges in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
The Manhattan District Attorney's office said it was coordinating with federal authorities, who are currently holding the 26-year-old shooting suspect at a detention center in Brooklyn. A time for the arraignment was not yet announced.
Mangione had been expected to face arraignment on the state charges Thursday, but the proceedings were postponed after federal authorities announced they were also bringing charges, and he was whisked to a federal courthouse instead in a move that appeared to shock Mangione's defense team.
" (I)n over three decades of prosecuting and defending criminal cases in New York, frankly, I've never seen anything like that what is happening here," Mangione's attorney, Karen Friedman Agnifilo, said in court, also calling it "very confusing, highly unusual."

That earlier perp walk display is going to earn him a mistrial at best and a jury nullification at worst for the prosecutors--and that is before the jury considers the overcharge of terrorism (when we don't even have a specific Federal DOMESTIC terrorism statute).
They are certainly giving his lawyers a lot to work with (and it appears he has very good lawyers more than ready to take all this on).

(214 posts)Other people get gunned down like dogs all the time and there is no multistate manhunt or terrorism charge. 1 CEO for once. Boo fucking hoo. The 50 armed guard perpwalk seemed designed to make him look like a supervillain from Batman instead of some actual dude who committed a crime. Gimme a fuckin break. It all goes to show who matters and who doesn't in this country.

(74 posts)The really insidious thing is that as you say they act like the victim's life in this shooting was meant more than your run of mill hundred or so people who are gunned down every day in this country. Add to that the tabloid superhero coverage of this lunatic Mangione only adds to his hero status amongst the morons in this country who think the murder was somehow justified. It is a perfect example of what's wrong with the corporate media in this country, divide, concur and appeal to the country's lowest instincts and ideals.
