House Republicans brush aside Musk's primary threats

House Republicans are largely brushing aside Elon Musks threats to unseat members who supported the initial government funding measure he helped torpedo earlier this week. After the tech billionaire called for the backers of that bipartisan bill to be voted out in two years, some GOP members dismissed Musks tirade as simply part of the game of Washington politics.
But even those who seem unfazed by threats suggest some colleagues could have good reason to worry given Musks immense wealth, ties to President-elect Trump and growing influence in Congress.
Ive been primaried four times, and Im more of a rebellious guy. If you threaten me, I dig my heels in and I dont respond well to threats, one GOP lawmaker said of Musks primary threats. All those social influencers out there were against me in the last primary, with a million followers and I didnt back down an edge, the lawmaker added, granted anonymity to speak candidly.
The lawmaker was one of the House Republicans to defend the original funding bill, which Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) rolled out Tuesday night to avert a shutdown.

(187,391 posts)At best they are bothsider-ing it if not sane washing.
Im sure a lot of this was because they are so entrenched in their district its going to take almost a miracle for them to lose a primary.
The point here really is how Trump clearly is cowing to Musk. For anyone else Id probably be embarrassed. It seems almost naive that he doesnt realize that Musk is slumming it and basically squatting in Mar a lago (which he could buy with pocket change) even crashing a dinner at the main table. Trump loved hobnobbing with celebrities and now hes stuck with possibly THE biggest celebrity in the world because no one else wants to have anything to do with him other than transactionally.
