(Reuters) -A strike at Starbucks will expand to over 300 U.S. stores on Tuesday, with more than 5,000 workers expected to walk off the job before the five-day work stoppage ends later on Christmas Eve, the workers' union said.
Starbucks, which operates more than 10,000 company-operated stores across the United States, said 98% of its stores remained open, with around 170 stores closed on Tuesday.
The workers union claimed more than 290 stores were "fully shut down", and more than 300 stores were on strike as planned across 45 U.S. states.
The Christmas Eve strike on Tuesday is projected to be the largest ever at the coffee chain, Starbucks Workers United said. "These strikes are an initial show of strength, and we're just getting started," an Oregon barista said in a union statement.

Today might be the last day of our strike, but our fight is far from over. We plan to keep fighting until Starbucks resolves its unfair labor practices and gives us a serious economic offer and we wont be able to win without your help. Stay tuned in the new year for what is next to come!
Solidarity forever,

(36,025 posts)Some people are willing to work on December 25th ... I get it! They need the overtime, or whatever.
But it should be voluntary work only. Anyone who needs to be off for religious or family reasons - DESERVES to get Christmas off. Starbucks and every other retail business in the USA has an entire year in which to plan how they're going to cover their holidays. (This includes Christmas, Thanksgiving, Memorial Day, 4th of July, etc.)
Scheduling your employees so they can have their needed days off, that goes with the deal. Starbucks must hire enough employees and pay them fairly, and train them to take over when others are off for holiday shifts.
If you can't do that, you shouldn't be in retail. DUHHH!

They suggest honking in support and having coffee at a local coffee shop.
I havent entered a Starbucks since shortly after Oct a year ago. But I like sharing the Albuquerque news.

(6,630 posts)I did not know why a bunch of people were standing on the corner in front of it. Then, I saw that it was closed.
We yelled and waved.
Good on them. And, good for Caribou Coffee! (Much preferred to Charbucks anyway!)
