An Azerbaijani airliner with 67 people onboard crashed Wednesday near the Kazakhstani city of Aktau, leaving at least 32 survivors, according to officials. More than 30 people may be dead.
The plane was en route from the Azerbaijani capital of Baku to the Russian city of Grozny in the North Caucasus.
Kazakhstans Emergency Ministry said in a Telegram statement that those on board included five crew. A total of 29 survivors, including two children, have been hospitalized, the ministry told Russias state news agency, RIA Novosti.
Another Russian news agency, Interfax quoted medical workers as saying that four bodies have been recovered and emergency workers at the scene as saying that both pilots, according to a preliminary assessment, died in the crash.

(27,474 posts)Some kind of severe mechanical issue? If so, the pilots probably did all they could. Unbelievable that anyone survived that, let alone half the passengers.

(27,474 posts)From what I've read, there was a bird strike. If the strike was to the controls of the aircraft, it would explain their difficulty in controlling it.

Perhaps the pilots thought being over water was better than land during their energency.

All the speculation about "birdstrike" are coming from Russian agencies.

(12,208 posts)"There was speculation in Russian media that the plane could have been shot down by Russian air defences, which mistook it for a Ukrainian drone.
The Fighterbomber Telegram channel, believed to be run by Capt Ilya Tumanov of the Russian army, released a clip showing what appeared to be holes, which some suggested resembled the kind of damage caused by shelling or an explosion with shrapnel.
Fighterbomber said it was unlikely that the holes were caused by a bird strike."

(4,918 posts)would be from a bird strike. That would have been on a leading edge not a trailing edge.
Wonder what other damage there was.
Saw video clips on the subway on the way home. The pilots did a good job saving almost half the pasengers.

(11,552 posts)Looks like shrapnel damage in the tail severed hydraulics/control link leaving the pilots with only throttles to control the plane, like JAL Flight 123.
