Pope urges negotiations to end Ukraine-Russia war

Source: BBC

Pope Francis has called for negotiations between Ukraine and Russia to end the war triggered by Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

In his traditional Christmas Day address, the Pope said "boldness [was] needed to open the door" to dialogue "in order to achieve a just and lasting peace" between the two sides.

His appeal followed a major Russian attack the same day on Ukraine's energy facilities, which Ukraine said involved at least 184 missiles and drones.

Earlier this year, Ukraine strongly rejected a call by the pontiff for Kyiv to negotiate an end to the war and have "the courage to raise the white flag".

For example, the terms could be for Putin to self defenestrate and return all occupied territories to Ukraine. That would be a reasonable set of conditions to end the war.

poke at the pope by donovan

Have you ever seen a picture of Pope Paul?
Have you ever asked yourself this question?
Would you trust this man with your soul now?
Would you trust this man? Ask yourself now

His eyes are sunken and his cheeks are hollow
While you dig the poor of the world they follow
He hoarding up their gold in the Vatican
Would you trust this man? Ask yourself now

Poke at the Pope, that's what we're havin'
Poke at the Pope, that's what we're havin'
Poke at the Pope, that's what we're havin'
Poke at the Pope, that's what we're havin'
Ave Maria, Ave Maria

Do you remember when the floods hit Italy?
How the things they treasured most were destroyed
All the paintings and the worshipped images
'Cause they lost their faith in the real God

He's goin' down and he's goin' down fast
You really didn't think the ignorance could last
All the little children are learning
And the constellation's turning

Poke at the Pope, that's what we're havin'
Poke at the Pope, that's what we're havin'
Poke at the Pope, that's what we're havin'
Poke at the Pope, that's what we're havin'

Mumbling by the tumbling tide
King of America humbly cried
Save my soul, save it soon!
The king of America fell in swoon

Oh yeah, my honey
Oh yeah, my honey
Oh yeah, my honey
Oh yeah, my honey

Should offer Putin the Vatican and the 100 billion dollars or so his "church" has amassed from the flock in exchange for Ukraine to be able to keep the Donbas and Crimea. That's sounds like a negotiation to me!

...from Ukraine, the restoration of Ukraine's pre-2014-invasion borders, the return of all POW's and kidnapped Ukrainians, the surrender of Putin, his generals and soldiers for war crimes trials, and the payment of reparations to Ukraine and to its citizens.

On the other hand, he is the Pope and the Catholic church has not historically found itself on the right side of many issues. Maybe, now would be a good time for the Pope to lead by choosing the moral path and not recommending that the victim of Russia's war of aggression surrender.

Ukraine is now enlisting 50 yr old men and teenagers. Thousands of young men left Ukraine to avoid service. Men are afraid to leave their houses because they are being picked off the street to serve. (Lots of videos online). Some sources say there are around 500,000 dead and severely injured Ukrainian soldiers . Much of the land in east Ukraine is inhabited by Russian speaking people - so give up some of the East to prevent further death.

“Ukraine's desperate need for soldiers spurs exodus of young men”

“ In recent months, Ukraine’s government has finally taken steps to address the manpower shortage. In late spring a law was passed to lower the conscription age and tightening draft rules. Conscription officers now patrol the streets looking for military-age men, checking their papers and sometimes taking away those who are subject to the draft. That has sent many young men into hiding, rarely venturing outside. Others have gone abroad.

One man, who ABC News is calling Ihor, left Ukraine late last year to avoid being drafted. ABC News is disguising his identity over fears he could face repercussions for speaking.”
