Trump's top border adviser says he will bring back family detention

U.S. immigration authorities will once more put families with children in detention centers when President-elect Donald Trump returns to office next month, according to incoming White House “border czar” Tom Homan. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement will look to hold parents with children in “soft-sided” tent structures similar to those used by U.S. border officials to handle immigration surges, Homan said.

The government will not hesitate to deport parents who are in the country illegally, even if they have young U.S.-born children, he added, leaving it to those families to decide whether to exit together or be split up. “Here’s the issue,” Homan said in a wide-ranging interview that included some of his most extensive comments to date on Trump’s plans for mass deportations. “You knew you were in the country illegally and chose to have a child. So you put your family in that position.”

President Joe Biden ended family detention in 2021, closing three facilities ICE called “residential centers” that offered about 3,000 beds. The facilities had a dorm-like design with recreational and educational programming. They were criticized by immigration advocates and pediatricians who said detention was harmful for children.

The federal judge who oversees immigration detention programs involving minors has set 20 days as the maximum amount of time children can be held at the family facilities. The deportation process often requires more time, so ICE has generally preferred to prioritize easier-to-remove adults. But Homan said that may change once Trump takes office. “We’re going to need to construct family facilities,” he said. “How many beds we’re going to need will depend on what the data says.”

6. Voters chose Trump to get rid of all black and brown immigrants, so they also chose family separations and detention.

They chose babies and toddlers in ages screaming for their parents. They chose sending children to unidentified places so their whereabouts or safety could not be traced. They chose to wreck the economy by deporting reliable workers who are key parts of our food chain and construction industries. They chose not to follow Jesus’ admonition to welcome the stranger but to follow the policy of rejecting any help.

Republicans and their voters will now own every heinous action that Trump and Homan take.

7. "You put your family in that position"? So the family DESERVES to suffer?

Trump put many women in a bad position when he sexually assaulted them. I guess they deserve to be punished.

My neighbor was put in a bad position when his house was robbed and vandalized. I reckon he deserves to suffer.

The American people were put in a bad position when COVID killed more than a million of us while the Emperor fiddled. I guess they deserve what they got.

Daddy's an abusive, drunken asshole. So his children should be punished?

A hurricane hits Louisianna and thousands lose their homes, their communities. Does this mean they need the government to step in and punish them?

A corporation lays off ten thousand workers even though they are enjoying record profits. Should the government punish those workers?

Is this right? Is this what they think? That the victims of someone else's actions, the victims of circumstances, need to be punished? That our government should, instead of helping victims, punish them further?

What kind of perverse sense of justice is this? If something happens to you that you have no way of controlling, then you are legally responsible and should be held liable under the law?

What the hell planet do these freaks come from? And why do so many American citizens support them?

But, of course, he doesn't care. If there's really a God (and I believe there is), he will get his karma. If not here, in the hereafter.
