DHS agents target the Vietnamese community in New Orleans

Source: Scripps News

Posted 5:04 PM, Dec 05, 2025

A DHS immigration enforcement operation dubbed "Operation Catahoula Crunch" began earlier this week in New Orleans, Louisiana, with a goal of 5,000 arrests over two months. Border Patrol commander Gregory Bovino, who is leading the operation, arrived in the city earlier in the week.

CBP has posted videos on social media showing arrests. One video shows agents pulling roofers from a job in Kenner, Louisiana, west of New Orleans. This focus on New Orleans comes after similar high-profile operations in cities like Chicago and LA, as part of the Trump administration's crackdown on illegal immigration.

Target are largely in Democrat-led states and cities identified as sanctuary jurisdictions. U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson, who is from Louisiana, said Thursday he supported the operation. "Democrats' sanctuary city policies have failed — making our American communities dangerous. The people of our GREAT city deserve better, and help is now on the ground," Johnson wrote.

On the ground, communities are on edge. Streets and businesses are empty in cities with high concentrations of Hispanic residents and Vietnamese communities. Many of those Vietnamese residents in particular endured waves of displacement to the U.S. at the end of the Vietnam war, after the fall of Saigon in 1975. Some have spent the past half century building lives and deep roots in New Orleans.

Called it when I heard they were heading to New Orleans to terrorize the population. There is a good-sized SE Asian (notably Vietnamese) population along coastal LA, many involved in the shrimp-farming industry.

Louisiana as Home
The Vietnamese Impact on Jefferson Parish’s Seafood Industry

We have a good-sized population of Vietnamese (over 15,000), as well as those from Cambodia and Laos, here in Philly.

From AI review of the literature:

The phrase "Irish and blacks need not apply" refers to historical discrimination in housing and employment, most notably the phrase "No Irish Need Apply" (NINA) which was common in 19th-century newspaper advertisements in the U.S. and the post-WWII era in the U.K..

The phrase "No Irish, No Blacks, No Dogs" was also widely reported as a common sign in U.K. lodgings during the mid-20th century.
Historical Context

United States (19th Century): Irish immigrants, particularly Catholics, faced significant discrimination in the U.S. and were often considered an inferior "race" by the Anglo-Protestant establishment. While some historians have debated the frequency of physical "NINA" signs, extensive evidence has been found for their use in newspaper employment advertisements, which listed the restriction for various jobs. Irish workers were often used for dangerous, cheap labor in preference to using enslaved people because the former were considered expendable, while the latter were valuable property.

Irish, jews, Italians and of course asians, and many others were all considered non-white. Catholics were also undesirable because of worries of their allegiance to the Pope instead of the United States, that was their theory of course. That carried all the way to the 60s when Kennedy almost didn’t run because he was Catholic.

My father was a first generation Irish Catholic from Boston like JFK.
JFK felt like a relative.

So it was the most exciting election of my lifetime and that is when I became a political junkie for life.

(my younger political history)
My dad when I was about 12 in '65 would make me go with him as he slipped flyers for Democrats local races under our neighbor's apt doors.

I saw (future Mayor) John Lindsey get out of a car in my nabe with no one around him when I was 12 or 13.
And I campaigned for him on his reelection.

I was sooo going to campaign for Bobby when he'd arrive for our NYS primary which was after California 😭 .
Watched the Dem '68 Convention while we were on vacation!

We had a long school strike, so I went and campaigned for Humphrey.

After McGovern which kind of did me in I switched to semi activism on issues for the most part vs candidates. Of course, I followed the Primaries, voted etc.

Then I came back to campaigning for Bill Clinton.
I was invited to help decorate the ballroom at the Sheraton in '92; which they opened up the 2 dividers so it was practically (at least 2 city blocks long) an Avenue long! We were allowed to stay.

There were televisions on those stands scattered about. A press table to the left, and a seat of bleachers near the front for the camera, and film people. A big screen on the stage.
It was sooo exciting! 🎉 😄

Oh, and as an vusual artist I collected political buttons!
I might still have a very small Kennedy button my uncle gave me.

While it turned out to be a disaster (McGovern) they had one of the last great Democratic Labor rallies for McG in midtown.

I climbed up a lamppost w camera, and took pics of McG, Lindsay, and Ted Kennedy. I had to zoom in on the negatives to get a closer image of them . I think I still have the prints I made.

Saw Hillary give a speech for Bill.
Then one of the coolest rallies was B Clinton giving a speech a day or two before the '92 election. It was in ?Jersey City.

Having traveled around the US twice, plus DC, Philadelphia, Boston going to a NJ city was no problem. Actually, I'd already had been to Newark Airport. Except, I can't remember how I knew where to go once I got out of the train station!

Anyway, I was listening to hear the crowds cheering in the distance as my guide! 😄 I got there in time. Everyone was semi-bundled up. It was in front of a 4 story or so ? block long government or judicial building. It was sooo cool!
I did a really good drawing of it later. I don't know if I still have it.

And my sister and I went down to Clinton's first Inauguration, both of Obama's. Sooo exciting, and uplifting!
Clinton's, and Obama's 2nd were on the warmish side for January. But Obama's first one? Clear, and bright, but Brrrrrrrrrrr!

Sometime you should get all of your memorabilia together.
Perhaps someone would want it. It sounds like quite a collection.

I saw Obama up close during one of his first campaign speeches.
I am one of the people who shouted out: I LOVE YOU.
Obama shouted back: I LOVE YOU TOO.

I almost fainted, I was with a friend who was with me and she thought I had
lost my mind shouting out to Obama like that. Then we he shouted back
she was dumbfounded like I was.

That's the only story I have. But it is a good one!

Even though he was a true American hero in WWII, it didn't matter.
The allegiance to the Pope propaganda was GOP political slander and theater.

My father was an Irish Catholic from Boston the same time JFK was there.
The love of America and freedom was palpable.

Old school Irish Catholics, recently off the boat were more cultural Catholics.
Not a lot of carrying on about religion, etc.
The Irish Americans here are the ones who went all evangelical and religious.

The discrimination continued into the 1900's.
JFK was given a very hard time in politics because he was Irish Catholic.

In the 1960's I was refused entrance into a children's group because I was Catholic.

And the point is that ethnic white people have been discriminated against in the US.

The time line was not the point of the discussion.

4. The Irish were the first British colonialism experiment
Sat Dec 6, 2025, 06:57 AM

Condensed history with a lot missing: Northern European tribes slaughtered, subjugated, and reproduced with each other for centuries. These factions battled for what is now known as Ireland as well as the British isles. The Irish were slaves for the British and Danes before Africans were. Their land and people were pillaged, plundered, and stolen. The United Kingdom (aka UK) still controls about 1/6 of the island in Northern Ireland. The history between the Brits and the Irish is long and bitter. The rest, as indigenous Americans and Africans (and anyone who happened to live where or disagree with the British, French, Spanish, Danish, etc, “explorers” that I prefer to call genocidal maniacs wanted something) know, is history.
