USPS considers allowing people to ship handguns through the mail

Source: ABC News/AP

LAS VEGAS -- Handguns could be mailed through the United States Postal Service for the first time in nearly 100 years if a proposed rule under the Trump administration takes effect. Democratic attorneys general in two dozen states sent a letter this week in opposition.

In 1927, Congress passed a law barring the USPS from mailing concealable firearms unless they were from licensed dealers in an effort to curb crime. In January, the Department of Justice revisited the 1927 law, calling it unconstitutional and arguing that it violated the Second Amendment, and urged the postal service to change its regulations.

The Department of Justice said that as long as Congress chooses to run a parcel service, “the Second Amendment precludes it from refusing to ship constitutionally protected firearms to and from law-abiding citizens, even if they are not licensed manufacturers or dealers.”

Last month USPS proposed a new rule that would allow anyone to mail concealable firearms like pistols and revolvers. USPS currently allows some firearms like long-barreled rifles and shotguns to be mailed, however they must be unloaded and securely packaged. Similar protections would be in place for handguns, which have evolved since 1927. The USPS said in a statement that it is reviewing public comments — which were due Monday — before making final changes.

chance of them being stolen from mail carriers, from their trucks. Sounds like a horrible idea unless they have a secure way of handling them.

Why not biological arms? Chemical arms? Why not small tactical nuclear arms?

The Department of Justice said that as long as Congress chooses to run a parcel service, “the Second Amendment precludes it from refusing to ship constitutionally protected firearms to and from law-abiding citizens, even if they are not licensed manufacturers or dealers.”

Tell me again how to know they are law-abiding. Most gun owners are law-abiding until they use their dick extenders to shoot up their sassy wife, a guy they don't like, or something else that irritates them?

by the time they get this passed, the Republicans will have already destroyed the USPS at the rate they are going......

Just wait until a private company takes over.........a first class letter, delivered, will cost 15.00, and packages will go sky high.
Rural America will get screwed the worse, because FedEx and UPS won't be able to dump them on the USPS for Last Mile Delivery like they have been doing for quite some time.....

Of course, the Trumphumping Voters in Rural America will pretend that that is just fine......

The only consolation that WE can have, is knowing that all the MAGA Trumphumping Voters will get creamed at least as bad as WE all do......ESPECIALLY the Rural masses.......

Gangsters would pay postal clerks handsomely to get their hands on one to resell or use on the street.

Sheesh!

My only guess is that they think they can track the names and addresses of who sent and who received the firearms. That way they can pin something on the recipient, who they assume ordered a gun by mail because he/she intended to commit a crime.

Great detective work there, Sherlock!
