Escondido man dies after brutal attack outside his Trump-themed home

Last week, Thomas Caleb Butler pleaded not guilty to attempted murder and other charges.

By Renee Schmiedeberg • Published 4 hours ago • Updated 3 hours ago

The man who was badly beaten outside his President Trump-themed Escondido home last week has died, the victim's wife told NBC 7 on Monday.

Army veteran Kerry Sheron, 69, was hospitalized after suffering significant injuries on May 20 after being attacked outside his home near East Mission Avenue and Buchanan Street, according to the Escondido Police Department. … Sheron remained in critical condition in the hospital until he died on Sunday night, according to his wife, Maria Garcia.

Thomas Caleb Butler, 32, was charged with attempted murder, elder abuse, making criminal threats, and battery. In court last Friday, Butler pleaded not guilty to attempted murder and other charges. A judge ordered Butler held without bail for the time being.

Security video obtained by NBC 7 from across the street shows the altercation. The bystander told NBC 7 the homeowner was standing in the front yard when the suspect came up and attacked him. The witness tried to intervene before the suspect fled on foot before officers arrived.

If we're going to preach tolerance and 1A, we can't have thugs resorting to violence from a different political direction.

And the victim was a veteran. SMH. What has this country come to?

The suspect accused of allegedly viciously hurting the elderly owner of the San Diego “Trump House” is a Navy veteran with “severe PTSD,” a family friend exclusively told The California Post.

Butler’s friend even said he “liked” the house, which Butler lived mere blocks away from, and supported President Donald Trump as a registered Republican.

The attack stunned the Butler family friend, who doesn’t know why he would have allegedly assaulted Sheron.

We've been belittled for decades as peaceniks who wouldn't know the bang bang end of a gun. I think they might be finding out the R's lied to them about that.

I don't agree with what this guy did... not by a long shot (pun unintended). But I DO understand... especially if his personal situation is like mine. You have no idea how much strength of will I've expended not to destroy the Blue Line and trump flag flying proudly across the street from my house. And the idiot flying it IS a veteran. Thing is, so am I. And my veteran haunches are flaring... they're killing my country. I don't think my oath ended when I mustered out.
